Will a vegetable garden work in sandy soil????

Well I'm planning on planting tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins, beans, and cabbage. I have soil that I could use besides the sandy soil, but I have to turn the dirt over by hand and it's extremely hard with the grass roots and **** so this soil would be a hundred times easier to till up. I do not have a rotatiller and do not have the money to get one so please give me advice:) Thank you!

Amend your sandy soil with top soil or compost and it will grow things just fine. in fact root vegetables like carrots prefer sandy soil but you do need some good soil mixed in. The thing with sandy soil is the water and nutrients run right through it. No matter which soil you start a garden in the soil has to be amended. What is good for weeds and native grasses is not good for growing veggies. I would suggest you kill or dig the weeds and grass before you dig or you'll be battling them all summer. Round-up is a good product for killing unwanted plants because it doesn't harm the soil. It only kills what it lands on.

You can rent tillers for a day from big box stores if you don't want to dig. This fall run the lawn mower through your leaves to break them up and pile them on your garden. They will rot down into good soil
