Should DDR2 RAM strips fit in a Dell Dimension 8400?

I bought Patriot memory DDR2 1 GB PC2- 5300 strips for my Dimension 8400, there are indentations on the old strips or grooves in the old and new strips.

I tried installing them but it didn't feel like they fit right so I didn't push the matter. Before i go return them or look online to buy new memory, i just want to make sure they are not compatible with either the mother board or just the plug.

Should the new strip fit or do i need to change the plug on the mother board too?

I looked at some crucial RA memory strips which claimed to be compatible and it looked like it had the same kind of groove/ or indentation on the bottom of the strip

thank you for your time.

Update:

I remember looking at the old RAM and it looked like one set had two sets of grooves meaning the slot has two grooves while the New RAM sticks i got only have one grove.

I there any chance that the Dell's slot for the sticks has two groves that will prevent the sticks from fitting?

It should fit according to specs you have the right RAM.

The notch in the middle of the stick is off center a little bit make sure you line that up with the notch in the DIMM slot. Sometimes you have to use a little pressure. When the white tabs pop up your good!.

As long as they are 240-pin and fit, they work.

PS, never heard of someone refer to RAM in "strips"! It's always "sticks"
