My cat doesn't really meow?
It's really raspy and he tries to a lot. I really thought he was just breathing heavy but he'll come up to me look me in the face and all that comes out is air. When he wants attention he'll meow loudly but only for a short time otherwise it will sound like air. I got him from a shelter he's a year old. He's a tabby.

sometimes the issue will be a problem with his voice box, but if he is acting normal & doesn't seem like he's in pain, he should be good.
but really, some cats meow quietly or they don't meow at all. one of mine only meows once in a blue moon. he usually just... grunts.

Is this a new thing? If so, you might want to have your cat checked out. if not, why worry? I have a cat who's got a fairly quiet meow and isn't nearly as vocal as her predecessor (who passed away at the age of 18). I like to say that my little kitty had a big meow and my big kitty has a little meow.
Some cats are just quieter than others. Also, cats can become a little more chatty (and needy) as they age. Your cat is still fairly young and is probably feeling out the situation.

I doubt there is anything wrong. Some cats have a soft meow. My cat is like that. The only way I know he's meowing is he opens his mouth.
