Road Trip Safety/Travel TIps for young first-timers?

My best friend and I are planning a road trip next Spring down the east coast (Boston - Florida?) We're not really sure where we want to go, but we'd rather have loose arrangements, like just driving wherever, whenever we feel like. We're both girls and will be 16/17 by then, obviously with licenses. We'll have a GPS in the car and we don't really want to spend too much money on things like hotels/restaurants. Safety/Travel Tips would be AWESOME. Thank you!

Also: is sleeping in the car okay? Like how would we arrange that.. Where would we park, etc?

The main thing you need to do is make sure you always have about a half tank of gas. The GPS helps with finding gas stations, but sometimes you may not think about it. It is better to have extra gas, than not enough.

If you don't want to spend alot of money on hotels/restaurants, then get a couple of sleeping bags and a tent. They are usually inexpensive and family members might have some availible for you.

You might want to do some research of the east coast and find out where camping grounds are so you can go there and you could probably sleep in the car if you wanted to as well. It would be the best choice. Make sure when you get to the cities to pay attention to parking signs and traffic signs. It would be the worst to have your car towed because you parked in a wrong spot. Just do a little research, and have a basic idea of where you would like to go on your trip. It never hurts to have a little planning.
