nicaraguan boa opinion?

ive got a nicaraguan boa, and he is the greatest reptile out of my collection, when i take him out of the terrarium he hisses or strikes, (not after he has eaten) but he is fine after he is out of the cage except he sometimes strikes at others, he is a 3 foot baby male, so how can i tame him, what is your opinion on them, anyone with experience?

Update:

do you like them

I love nic's, they're great little boas! I have a super salmon Nicaraguyan boa and she's the sweetest thing. She was definitely a bit nippy as a youngster though, like most snakes and specifically nic's. I find the dwarf locality boas are nippier as babies but they all tame down with patience and handling. I found with my girl that it was just time. She was cage defensive like yours but over time she just started to relax. I always scooped, not grabbed from above and gave her time to realize I was taking her out instead of just grabbing her out of a sleep. Avoid handling after feeding and during sheds and really that's all - nothing special just be patient and keep handling him, he will come around, they always do!!

    Good luck:-)

Nicaraguan Boas are, as a general rule, fairly high-strung. Consistent, gentle handling is the key to getting one to a point where it is not quite as jumpy and nippy. As your boa gets older, and with consistent handling, it should calm down. I have an Nic that was a real face muncher when he was younger, but is much better now.

Also, if you are using a glass tank as an enclosure, you need to seriously consider moving to a regular snake cage. Coming at a snake from above makes you look like a predator and will immediately make them defensive. A hook would also be a good idea. You can alert the snake to your presence and intentions with the hook and also use the hook to help lift the snake and then transition to your hands once the snake is out of the cage.

Uhm, just need a clarification here, you don't pick him up right after you've fed him. He could regurgitate the meal he just ate.

That aside, to try and tame him down, just keep on handling him. Accustom him to handling. The more and more you handle him the better he'll get. And if you are feeding him in the same enclosure that is his everyday home, then begin feeding him in another enclosure. I use a plastic tub, like a sterillite or rubbermaid. They're about 5 bucks at Walmart. Just feed him in there, then carefully lift him back into his regular enclosure. This way he will begin to associate the tub with where he eats, instead of associating his enclosure with when he eats. Biggest thing though, just keep on handling him.

On my opinion of boas. I don't really like them (except Brazilian Rainbows. These are the most beautiful snake in my opinion). Their colour and patterning turns me off. I prefer the colours of Pythons. But if I had to choose between a boa or colubrid, I'd without a doubt choose a boa. Really don't like colubrids.

I don't very much have experience w/ these guys, but read a lot about them as I love boas certainly some of my fav. snakes in the whole world, but the best way to usually tame any snake is to just let it adjust to it's surroundings and condition it to certain things like put your snake on a schedule like when it will be fed, when it will be handled, when the cage should be cleaned, the water dish is going to be changed, etc. then soon enough you may have a tamed boa constrictor on your hands, it just takes time and patience to get the animal to stay calm, but yeah it may not work since i've heard some many times that these snakes are highly aggressive, but time and patience is the key to getting a tame snake all you have to do is work with it.

Bci - boa constrictor imperator - stay smaller (6ft avg selection). those are often got here across interior the puppy commerce; seen the uncomplicated boa. no longer as rather as actual purple tails IMO. occasion - a Columbian boa. low-priced. Bcc - boa constrictor constrictor - bigger length (avg selection 8ft) and not as uncomplicated interior the puppy commerce and greater high priced to purchase. the actual purple tails, that are called Suriname Boas, are bcc's. they are IMO between the main desirable snakes and that they actually get better with age. between the biggest and maximum uncomplicated blunders in terms of boas is the term "Columbian purple tail boa". there is not any such ingredient and you will continually pay attention human beings say "I also have a Columbian purple tail." this is incorrect, as a Columbian boa and a purple tail boa are easily categories of boas. The Suriname is the purple tail, this is the bcc and the colmbian boa is the bci. David is punctiliously correct along with his factor approximately Years of pass breeding diverse boa species. many times situations procuring a boa from everywhere different than a longtime, respected breeder, will bring about you easily having no theory what variety of snake you have. it may desire to be a bci, in spite of the shown fact that it could even have been mixed with bcc alongside the way. So once you're expecing to get a snake that maxes out at 6ft, you easily finally end up with a ten footer. it is significant with boas to renowned precisely the place they arrive from - meaning their lineage and blood lines - once you're making plans to reproduce them and additionally in case you like a smaller sized boa. :-)
