Could I kill small game (birds, squirrels) with this gun?

I honestly don't know anything about guns, so I'm sorry if I sound like a complete idiot.

I have an old air gun; it's called an "air strike 240" and is 0.24 cal/6.0 mm. It's at least 5-10 years old, but it still works. I'm wondering if I should bother buying any ammo or just get a new one. I'm interested in hunting squirrels and birds in the forest near me or just in my backyard. I'm only 16 years old so I can't get a real gun. Any help is appreciated.

Update:

it's 240 fps

    Q. Could I kill small game (birds, squirrels) with this gun (air strike 240)?

    A. What you have is an airsoft gun. Which means it is not powerful enough to cleanly and quickly take small game. When it comes to airsoft and hunting, you need to understand that airsoft guns shoot soft plastic/rubber projectiles that are designed not to penetrate skin/cause injure (at least on humans) at very low energy levels (typically less than .5 ft-lbs of muzzle energy). Even small birds and mice require at least 2 ft-lbs of impact energy and at least some penetration to produce a quick, clean kill.(1) Shooting a bird, mouse, squirrel... with an airsoft gun will simply injure it and cause it to suffer.

    S. Any help is appreciated.

    R. If you want to hunt small game with an airgun, you should get something that produces around 7 ft-lbs of muzzle energy (like the Daisy 880 or Crosman 2100) using lead pellets as a minimum. Something that produces 12-15 ft-lbs of muzzle energy (like the Gamo Big Cat/Hornet, RWS 34, BSA Supersport...) would be a better option.

Additionally you need to check with your state's game management agency concerning what license you need and what the game laws in your state are. Odds are you will also have to take a hunter education class if you haven't already. (Squirrel is usually considered a game animal with a season and requires a license in the US. Most birds are generally protected by law and cannot legally be shot with an airgun though there are sometimes exceptions to this depending on the laws in your state.)

And finally you need to make sure you can legally hunt where you want to. If you live out in the country in an unincorporated area, then you're probably OK to shoot an air-rifle. If you live in a city/town/village and/or the forest you mentioned is in a city/town/village, then the odds are a local ordinance makes it illegal to shoot an air-rifle. Additionally, you need to make sure you secure the permission of the landowner before you hunt on his/her land or you're guilty of trespassing and could face arrest.

You should probably get a new one. It sounds like an old airsoft gun and that won't do anything to the animals except hurt them, if you could even hit them with an old airsoft toy. Get a pellet gun (caliber .177) and that will work much better. It should kill most of them quickly, shoot better, and be overall nicer than the toy you were using.

    Don't kill those poor things.

Would you like birds or squirrels to point a gun at you?

don't listen too stupid we wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for killing and eating animals but that wouldn't kill a squirrel and and only kill a bird with perfect head shot
