Do most parents pay for their children's car insurance?
Ok, don't rant at me, I'm asking this question innocently.
Basically, I want to know if it's common for parents to pay for their children's car insurance (I'm thinking of those 17, 18, 19, etc. who just passed their test and haven't moved out), or if the child is usually made to pay it themselves?
I don't know if part time jobs will cover the cost or what (especially as I imagine they will usually pay for their own petrol), but £3000 a year does seem quite a bit for a teenager to be able to afford. And seems like more and more youngsters are getting cars...
I don't think I would expect my parents to pay for mine when I pass my test, but then again I don't know how I'd be able to afford it myself either... So I'm looking for some insight on the topic.

We paid for our children to be added as a named driver on our cars (each child in turn) once they had passed the test. As soon as they could afford to buy their own car, they were responsible for their own insurance too.

Please don't be so absurd. How can the different motive force be a t fault once you've been making use of without coverage and breaking a number of motoring guidelines? you'd be prosecuted for having no coverage and fined and performance a huge variety of issues on your licence. this can take a lengthy time period, yet will ensue. also get a huge high-quality- this you're able to pay off in smallish quantities in keeping with month. contained in the in the interim your insurer will in all likelihood inform you they have ended your coverage and also you're uninsured. you ought to also tell your insurers you've a prosecution pending. think ofyou've got to pay for the wear and tear to the automobile you hit and £10 a month is ridiculous- they could do some distance extra acceptable to get a courtroom order on your lower price rates or any earnings you've, or bankrupt you once you've neither. that is all slightly a mess you shouldn't be making use of even as this all finishes, except you will pay very intense coverage- and do not assume the insurers to settle for £10 a month both!! in case you may discover the money for the coverage then there'll be no difficulty paying your high-quality, and the motive force you hit.

I paid for my own, and in fact have always paid for all my own car bills, and teenagers now get given plenty enough by their parents without them asking for money for their biggest toy...because that's what a car is, it's a toy, it's not a necessity to hardly ANY people, let alone children who still live at home and get lifts everywhere!
Pricing daft kids out of cars (yes, I know not all of them are daft!) seems to be the insurance companies response to the DSA passing more and more idiot car drivers to crash on our roads, and parents instilling less and less sense in their children!
There are so many safety features on modern cars, that people get completely complacent and don't pay attention properly, so it's down to the insurance companies to keep these people off the road as the DSA and DVLA won't do anything about it.

From a personal point of view, I am currently 17 and about to pay for my own. As I'm studying at college, I have a weekend job which brings in about £150 a month. I've been saving for a long time. I'm guessing most teenagers who pay for their own insurance, if in education, would have to, considering how much it is. To put in into perspective though, my 3 friends who already drive had their lessons, car and insurance paid for them by their parents. So from my experience, 75% of teenagers who drive had their parents pay, supposedly because of the sheer amount of time we have to save for to pay for ourselves out of a miniumum wage part time pay slip.

I got my first car when I was 22 and still living at home. Parents paid for the car, I paid to tax/insure/MOT it myself. Occasional repairs paid for by parents, but the vast majority of things paid for by me. Insurance started at just shy of £1500 a year. I've been working full time for a few years, so of course I pay for the tax and insurance and petrol myself.
Teenagers aren't SUPPOSED to be able to afford the insurance. Driving is a privilege (a very expensive one), not a right. Insurance companies don't like teenagers, since they tend to have horrific accidents that cost a lot of money, so insurance is priced accordingly.
When I was younger, everyone I knew with a car paid for the insurance themselves. I never knew anyone whose parents would pay it for them.

More an more teens are NOT getting cars. In fact less and less teens are taking the test even as most know they will not be able to afford to run a car and its rarely something parents will agree to fund in these poor economic times.
Looks like that is the way it is now for younger potential drivers. At various times as you go through life there will be things you would like to be able to do or have but due to age and/or finances you cannot - for many teens this is how it is now for cars in that just like me and a new Ferrari I don't have enough money.
I grew up in small village in the Midlands with a poor bus service and a motorcycle was the only affordable option then in the late 70s and early 80s until I (and my mates) were 20 and over. The times of loads of money are over and things are gradually changing back to the way they were back then when we were not so affluent

Most of the people I know pay their kids' insurance.
We required all three of our kids to buy their first cars and to insure them and maintain them with their own money. Our view was that it was better for them to understand the cost right away rather than when they were trying to pay bills.
However, as long as our daughter was in college (she was the only one who went) we paid her insurance and the parts for her car. She and I always did the work on her cars together, just as with her brothers. Anyway, we reasoned she had enough challenges at college without the extra costs and she already had a taste of the realities of car ownership.
Congratulations for taking the lead on this. I suspect your parents will be open to negotiation for helping with the insurance costs in return for something like good grades in school.
