Can an engine seize in a week?

My dad told me that he thinks the engine in my car seized. The lights on my car are working, but when I turn the key nothing happens. It doesn't even seem like it was turning over..... But it just doesn't seem right that my engine could seize in a week. My car is 20 years old. Do you guys have any other ideas about what could have happened?

Engines seize rather suddenly, typically in less than a minute. However it almost always happens while driving - the oil circulation is lost for some reason, which starves the entire engine of oil. The rod bearings are first to suffer but the engine seizes when the lack of oil to the piston rings causes them to seize in the cylinders.

The starter is a good suspect, but don't replace things without troubleshooting. A $20 multimeter can save you a small fortune in unneeded parts. The first source is a readily available model - you may find a better deal at hardware or auto parts stores.

With make, model, and year of your car we may be able to provide more help. For example, In 20 year old Honda cars the ignition switch is a better suspect than the starter is.

Just because the engine doesn't turn over doesn't mean the engine is seized. Could be the ignition switch or the starter or the relay for the starter or a bad ground. To check the engine put a socket on the crankshaft bolt and try to turn it by hand. Turn it clockwise. If you can, pull the spark plugs out and turn it.

Buddy the engine can seize in a matter of minutes without oil, and that is the only time the engine will seize (unless it has one BAD bearing), other wise it is either the engine is hydrolocked, it has a bad starter or a bad battery in need of replacement or a jump/push start.

Check your oil. If your oil level is too low and has been for a while your engine could sieze after about a day. Also check the starter and the ignition as they may well be malfunctioning. If you've driven a lot in the week prior to the problem arrising definately check the oil because no oil will turn your engine into a very heavy sculpture very quickly.

you will usually notice a lot of cluncking coming from the engine before it seizes. try jump starting your car, if it doesnt start try replacing the batter with the one from another vehicle. it that works just go buy a new battery. if not, remove starter and have that checked

  • It can happen but see if you can not turn the engine over by hand with a tool on the bolt through the harmonic ballencer. If it moves then the problem is else where. If it will not move, start testing for the root cause.

A car battery could have enough power to light the lights, but not enough to turn the starter. Check to see if your battery has a full charge.

  • If it started and ran OK when you parked it a week ago, there's nothing much wrong with it. Start by charging battery.

Try getting the battery tested before you jump to conclusions.
