Study. You spend a year or more studying witchcraft, religion and history. It takes a long time and a lot of practice. You can do that on your own, or an easier way (depending on where you live, it you're over 18, etc) is to join a coven and let the coven members teach you.

By the end of probably a year you can be initiated as a witch and successfully practice witchcraft/you religion.

You become a Witch the same way you become anything else: you study for a period of time, then you apply that study in practice; then you continue to practice to perfect your skills.

Best places to learn from would be reputable authors, as well as seeking out reputable teachers and/or covens

ETA: Sorry, I want to correct "Abigail" above here. What she is describing is Wiccan Witchcraft which is but one branch of Witchcraft that not all Witches follow. I tell you this from almost 12 years of study and practice as a Witch:

    1) Not all Witches adhere to Wiccan concepts and ethics. Not all Witches will follow their "Rede" or the concept of "Returns times three"

    2) Wiccans do not use the word "Cowan".

    3) One cannot "initiate" themselves. Initiation determines that one is integrating themselves into a group, you cannot integrate yourself into yourself. You would dedicate yourself to Wicca, not initiate.

    4) Not all Witches who are not also Wicca worship a Goddess (or God for that matter). Witchcraft is NOT the same thing as Wicca. Wicca is a religion whose main SOLE focus is God and Goddess worship, as well as striving towards personal balance, and stressing personal responsibility. Witchcraft is a craft of practical skills developed over years of study and application. There are no Gods to worship. The worship of a God is not a necessity for the practice of Witchcraft. You can certainly be a part of any religion you so wish (or no religion at all) AND still be a Witch, but religion nor deity (god) worship is NOT a requirement of a Witch.

    5) Spell work shouldn't be a priority. Spell work is an advanced practice that should only be used by those who have taken the time to learn that one skill. It is indeed difficult to master if you don't know what you're doing.

It's a common thing for novices to make claims about EVERYONE when it only applies to the ONE or one type. I am not a Wiccan, but I am a Witch, and I don't do, nor adhere many of the things "Abigail" states Witches do. Don't get sucked into "Wiccans must do this" or "Witches are all that", because all Wiccans and all Witches are individualistic, utilizing similar practices.

You have to get in tune with nature and tap into a greater source of energy. If you don't it will be harder to work spells: the greater source of energy is to put behind the spell, being one with nature is so you work with it not against it. The Wiccan way would be to study for a one hundred and one days as a cowan, then initiate yourself under the goddess. You should have a bond with the goddess before than so you know what you're getting into. Being a witch (or at least a good one) is hard, I've been at it for 3 years and my spells still come out all odd and slow. If it is what you think will make you happy thou, you should pursue it, by the way do not let every one convince you that you need all of the tools: you really don't I swear. Witchcraft is really hard to put into words but i would advise you to use your own judgement, that's half of what matters in any magic, the other half is effort and the whole vizulization thing. If you read books about being a witch you'll here a lot about vizulization: trust me....

I respect your sincerity, and if we could sit down and talk I suspect we would at least agree that each of us has a spiritual nature within us that yearns for something greater than ourselves. Centuries ago, a great philosopher called this a "God-shaped vacuum" we each have within us.

But where did this vacuum in our hearts come from? The Bible says that God put it there—and the reason He did was so that we would seek Him and come to know Him in a personal way. You and I have a soul that yearns for God; as the Bible says, God "has also set eternity in the hearts of men" (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

But the Bible tells us something else very important. It tells us there is a barrier between us and God—a barrier we cannot overcome on our own. The reason is because this barrier that separates us from God was caused by our sin. Our greatest need is to have our sins forgiven, and this is something no amount of meditation or similar practice can overcome.

Only God can erase this barrier—and this is why Jesus Christ came into the world. He was God in human flesh, sent from heaven to save us from our sins. Don't be deceived by paths that promise to unite you with God but don't deal with your sins. Instead, by faith commit your life to Jesus Christ and trust Him alone for your salvation. Only then will you discover the joy and peace you are seeking.

You get all there is to study about what it is they do and you would practice some of the things until thry start to work and you none in those skills. But I would be careful about this subject based on what country a person lives in. Some countries this practice is punishable by death.
