How do I prevent shin splints?

I run 3-4 times per week and my shins have started hurting. They are tender to the touch and it hurts when I'm done running. I know thatn low-impact exercise like swimming can help, but I still need to train for a marathon I'm running this fall.

I don't want to just take ibuprofen every day, because that's not good for you. Is there any way to treat this or prevent it and still be able to go running?

Update:

Also, will this eventually go away as my legs get stronger? Can I build up to the point where I won't have this problem anymore?

Shin splits are usually caused by shoes that don't fit properly, so get your sneakers fitted by a professional. Always stretch! Ice twice a day for at least 30 minutes. One way to do this is fill a small Dixie cup with water, then freeze it. Rub it over your shins, it really helps with the pain!

If you aren't running any races before the marathon, take a week off. Your legs need rest to heal faster, and you can get back in shape quickly.

    Good luck!

I have shin splints too, it sucks. The first thing to look at is your shoes, make sure they're good running shoes, not $20 ones from Walmart. Also always make sure you stretch, I usually warm up a bit then stretch really good, pointing toes upward and down, ect. Mine haven't gone away entirely, they still definitely hurt after a run, but hopefully yours will get better.
