This should help, it's some of the history of the last 9 Republican Presidents, not very impressive.
George W. Bush - weapons of mass destruction, Iraq War
George H.W. Bush - decreased taxes for the rich and increased taxes for everyone else.
Ronald Reagan - Iran/Contra Scandal, only U.S.President to make deals with terrorists.
Gerald Ford - pardoned Richard Nixon.
Richard Nixon - Watergate Scandal.
Dwight D. Eisenhower - increased America's involvement in Vietnam, made deals with Italy and Turkey to place America missile bases in those countries, which led to the Soviets trying to place missiles in Cuba, which led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Herbert Hoover - economic policy got America deeper into the Great Depression.
Calvin Coolidge - began the economic policy of laissez-faire (trickle down economics) which led to the Great Depression.
Warren Harding - his administration was caught in several scandals, most notably the Teapot Dome Scandal, which was about bribery and oil reserves in the U.S.

Research what each party supports and opposes. And don't just limit yourself to those 2 parties as there are many others to chose from. You may find that you agree more with the other existing political parties. Whichever side you agree with more, that's the political party you could define yourself as.
I had a difficult time deciding when I was first able to vote. I supported and opposed each side almost equally but by researching the different choices, I discovered that I was a libertarian. But if you want to make an informed decision, it will take some research.

Bob had the only half way decent answer that I saw, but he was still off. Those are the ideas that USED to hold true, but now don't. EVERY political party will tell you what they think you want to hear, then do whatever they want.
Ignore what party they say they belong to and what they say they will do when in office. Instead focus on what they have done in their past and figure they probably won't change for the better when getting in office.

The two parties have different policies. You can look up the specific policies online (your local member might also have his own agenda which he should have online). In general, though, here are the basic policies:
Republicans:
* Support less economic regulation
* Support more "traditional" social values (e.g. no abortion, gay marriage, etc), also generally more religiously conservative and less tolerant of other faiths.
* Support tax cuts for the wealthy and reduced social security; more popular among the upper classes, but paradoxically also strongly supported in less prosperous rural areas.
Democrats:
* Support greater social freedom
* Support tighter economic regulation
* Support greater taxation on the wealthy rather than lower socioeconomic classes.

Democrats attract moochers, liberal idealists, black, and other fringe groups. Republican attracts white middle class groups, conservative idealists, and the rich except for the excessively rich like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey.

Read about issues and decide what your opinions on them are, then see which party more closely aligns with what you think.
Here's a hint: you can pick and choose from both or reject party labels entirely if you feel like it.
Here's another hint: ignore other peoples overheated rhetoric and generalizations.

If you think you're entitled to everything under the sun and expect it to be provided to you for free by the government, you're a democrat.
Otherwise, you're a republican.
