'k' is short for 'kilos'. 'kilos' is from the language of Classical Greece, aand means '(one) thousand'.

So small case 'k' is short for 'thousand'.

Hence '5k' means 5000 (five thousand).

In currency $5k, means five thousand dollars, or £5k means five thousand pounds.

Capital (large case) 'K' has a completely different meaning. In scientific terminology it is temperature on the absolute scale. 'K' is short for 'Kelvin' after Lord Kelvin.

Hence freezing point of water is 273K ( 0 degrees C (Centigrade)),NOT 'degrees K (Kelvin), just 'K', and the boiling point of water is 373K (100 degrees C(Centigrade)).
