Emergency brake line repair ?

if my brake line blows out,(leaks), can i disconnect it and crimp the line shut,to get it home safely? And would i need to bleed the lines too,if i refill the master cyl.?

Update:

The front half of the master cyl. Is full, and the rear is empty. I can see the line leaking at the point where it connects to the driver's side, rear wheel.

Update 2:

Jak - For a quick fix,the fuel line jumper sounds excellent, but the blow out is so close to the coupling that i don't see it as an option. Great contribution, thanks!

if you absolutely had to crimp it to get it home then you could, but i wouldn't do that. You either need to replace it, or you can fix it with some fuel line and a couple hose clamps. Whichever route you go, you will need to bleed them.

Difficult? - no. Critical? - Yes! Varying lengths of pre-crimped brake lines are available from most auto parts stores and they're pretty cheap. If you've worked on brakes before, you can install these and bleed the brakes yourself. If you're not sure - please do yourself and other motorists a favor and let a professional fix it. If the $500 price seems high (sounds like they want to replace or rebuild the calipers) - then get a 2nd or 3rd estimate. It never hurts to have several options and opinions...

clearing something up- brake LINES. not hoses. yes, brake hoses are cheap and relatively easy to install. brake lines on the other hand, can NOT be bought pre bent, they are bought in straight pieces, and often must be flared, bent, (custom made). heres the thing, its not replacing the little rusted spot thats time consuming, its finding a place to flare and connect to the old line. if its leaking near the gas tank, but the closest flarable piece (not too rusted) is up near the master cylinder, the line has to be made from the front all the way to the back. also, the bleeders must be unsiezed and opened, the proportioning valve unstuck, and the whole system bled, road tested and leak checked for a proper job. possibly very time consuming, depending on amount of rust, sticking parts, etc. assuming you do need calipers, 500 doesnt sond far fetched depending on how much old line is salvagable. (how much rust are we dealing with-=$$) i wouldnt try this yourself, if your still skeptical try another shop, or ask them to please only do the calipers if necessary to stop the leak or bleed the system (not that likely). good luck.

I have done that on my van before but of course you will not have any brakes to the wheel you cut so expect to stop more sooner then usual, but it has worked if doing this please use precaution when driving and be safe, Brakes will go to floor but will stop just pressure it slowly and i never messed with bleeding them til i had the brake work done in the end

Your master cyl. has two sections in it, front and rear. If one fails, the other one is still operating to get you to safety. So, don't worry about it.
