No dog from a reputable, certified breeder is cheap. This is not to be mean, just realistic. However, you will get it cheaper if you buy a "pet quality" one instead of a "show quality" one.

If you do happen to find a fantastic dog with great lineage for a low cost, the animal itself will still be very expensive, especially when it comes to medical care. So really, no dog is cheap, even from a shelter. Buying from a reputable breeder may reduce the health costs throughout its lifetime, though, if the dog's parents and grandparents were healthy.

No well bred dog is cheap to buy, and any breeder will not sell to someone who is looking for a deal. If you cannot afford o buy the puppy, how on earth will you be able to support that dog throughout its life.

Yes there may be 'back yard breeders' who will sell you a cheap pup with no papers, but these will also likely have no health testing, or no thought behind their breeding.

There are also working dogs (working sheepdogs, field bred labs, spaniels) which may be sold cheaper than their show-type counterparts, but these dogs generally dont make good pets, thy need a lot more exercise and training to keep them happy.

The bottom line is that if you want a decent dog, you need to pay a decent price.

I don't know why you are against shelters. Every pet my family has owned has come from a shelter including a pure bred border collie and a pure bred wheaten terrier in addition to a Lhasa-poo which is now very "trendy" and expensive and a Maltese-poodle mix who is adorable. There are plenty of pure bred dogs at shelters. You just have to go often and let the staff know what type of dog you are looking for and they will call you when they get a dog matching your description

A legitimate breeder does not sell dogs for cheap as it costs a lot to raise and breed quality dogs unless you are a sleazy backyard breeder who has too many animals and breeds them too young and/or too often

None. There is weekly food, toys, leash, collar, bed, puppy pads, brush, shampoo, nail clipper, possible grooming appointments, possibly vet appointments. They need their yearly shots. There could be an emergency. My parents dog was rushed into surgery and they ended up spending about $1000 without warning.

Also, I know you said no shelter comments, but just so you know, you can find purebred puppies that are usually between $100-$250. And those pups already have their shots and many of them give you a free certificate for a spay/neuter when the puppy is old enough.

So its just something to maybe take into consideration because you wont have to pay for the vet visits unless its an emergency.

Unfortunately dogs are not cheap to own. Even if you buy cheaply from a back yard breeder there are always the vet costs to take into consideration.

Sods law dictates that when you have the least amount of money will be the time the dog gets sick and needs a vet.

Little dogs are the least expensive.. The cheapest might be a dachshund or a Beagle but for them to be low price you would have to go to a reputable breeder, too get them at a good price :) HOWEVER dogs are very expensive to own with there food, vet, supplies and everything. They can go up to over 1000 dollars if had health problems..
