Should I be worried, I'm a female traveling to Mexico City alone?
I am traveling to Mexico City soon alone. I am in my mid 20s and a female. I've traveled alone before within the states and my father is originally from Mexico (a smaller city in Northern Mexico) so I am a little familiar though I know Mexico City is probably a whole other ball game. My mom is starting to worry me about my safety. I know it's not the safest place and there is a lot of crime, but how bad is? I don't want paranoid speculation. Please only answer if you have first hand experience.

Crime wise Mexico City is the safest city in Mexico. As in any very large city there are areas to be avoided - especially in Mexico City. Still it has the lowest murder rate of all the mega cities in North America. The most real danger in Mexico City is earthquakes which we have been having a lot of recently. As a friend says, Mexico City is a massive slum with a few nice areas. Use common sense. Don't go into areas that look really bad. If you have to cross them in an automobile stay in the vehicle and avoid them generally at night. Oddly enough there are areas in Mexico City, including downtown, where you can walk about safely and happily at night. I do it all the time. If you use public transport don't tempt pickpockets and purse snatchers. The Distrito Federal where Mexico City is located is surrounded on three sides by the State of Mexico which is currently the most corrupt and crime ridden state in the country. Stay away from the north and east borders of the City with the State. These are some of the most vile urban areas in Mexico State and where some of the worst elements are.
Really you will be fine. You will have a great time. If there is anything else I can do to help just let me know.

Well, I was born and grown in Mexico City. So, I can tell you, Mexico City is considered the safest city in the country, and, one of the safest huge cities in the world, like New York, Chicago, LA, Tokyo, or London.
Around 23 million people lives here, being the second most populeted city in America, just after Sao Paulo in Brazil, that's because this city offers so many things to see and do, as the historically economic and cultural core of Latin America. The people here is the friendlier on earth. Let me tell you that, about a 40% of the population is white... is not strange to see blond girls or guys walking through the city... it's really usual. So don't worry, in the two decades i have live in this city i have been completely safe, i have never heard of any murder or narcotrafic problems, people, i remind you, is amazingly friendlier and helpfully. As every huge city, Mexico City has their problems, and areas you should avoid at night if you don't wan't to have any problem... but generally, this is a beautiful safe city.

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) may be the capital of Mexico and an amazing city surrounded by grand hill ranges. To see this city you are able to select the very best selection hotelbye . The city's place is certainly breathtaking. Two impressive snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower above it using their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also preserves countless pointers of its past and these are issues that entice the tourists. The whipping heart of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where the country's first structure was proclaimed in 1813 and now could be one of the most visited place of Mexico City since it's one of the world's biggest squares. In Mexico City you can also visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

And some ignorant people don't know the difference between Monterrey and Mexico City...
In Mexico City there are no beheading, etc. Don't listen to fools...
Unfortunately I don't think it's that safe from a woman on her own, especially if she is not from around. If you really have to go there never, ever get a taxi from the streets. They are being used by criminals for express kidnapping (where they take you to a cash machine and make you get as much money as you can, it happened to my auntie). Get a trusted taxi site and call them when you need transportation, your hotel can help you with that. Also, try not to be out when it's too late.
To be honest I am from Mexico City and I use to love visiting and going to places on my own. I am not trying to scare you, just want you to be very safe as there are a lot of thieves like in most large cities.

You can go to any resort area or town. They are all safe. Large resort destinations have adequate tourist police and are well protected. Tourism in Mexico is their largest industry. They guard it jealously. Don't listen to all the people who tell you it is dangerous. The vast majority of people who tell you that have never been there. They are just propagating the myth. It's just not true. But prudence is a virtue and people are poor. Take precautions with your positions. 35 miles north of Pueto Vallarta is a little town of Sayulita, population about 2500. It is just a wonderful place to be. English is spoken in most places. Check it out. I spent 3 months there last winter and loved every minute of it. Puerta Vallarta is a wonderful town. However it is big and crowed now. But if you don't mind lots of tourists it is a fine place to visit. Cancun is usually cheap to go to, but if you head that way go to Play del Carmin. It is much nicer. There is a little hotel on the beach Hotel Colibri (hummingbird in English). It is much more reasonable than the other hotels, is modern and clean, and a nice place to stay on the beach but near everything. AND: The food at the street stands and at the local restaurants is usually fresher than at the tourist restaurants. Go and Enjoy.

Listen to Ghost of the Parties, I am also from Mexico City and I used to travel alone all of the time, it is safe but it is a big city. Imagine you are going to Chicago alone, something like that, but 10 times bigger.
Be safe, be smart, go for the safety, if it looks sketchy, don't venture.
Only use sitio taxis, don't get wasted, don't stay out too late. Have fun, don't wear jewelery or shiny stuff.

Mexico City is kind of sketchy right now. I suggest you stay in well populated areas, and don't wander off down side streets or anything like that. You say your father is from Northern Mexico, and if you inherited darker skin and hair, it might help you to blend in with the crowds compared to a pale blonde. If you want to go on a tour or visit someplace, have your concierge arrange it for you. And, keep your money and credit cards in a safe place. I had someone steal stuff right out of my purse while I was there. Fortunately, my passport was in a different pocket, otherwise I would have been stuck there for awhile.

Did you read / see the recent news about over 50 mutilated bodies were dumped on the side of a busy Mexican hwy? People are getting kidnapped, robed & killed every day & mexico has the highest murder rate then 30 other countries combined.
I would not suggest going there, but if you intend to, contact the US embassy & tell them where you will be staying & other contact info.
Good luck.
