Is heart failure a death sentence or can it be controlled with medication?

My mother has been diagnosed with heart failure and my immediate reaction was that she had been given a death sentence. She has been prescribed beta blockers and ace inhibitors which seem to be working well.

I am just really looking for reassurance. With these tablets, what are her chances of survival?

Beta blockers are a cornerstone treatment in heart failure but they don't "thin the blood". They are good in heart failure as they reduce blood pressure, heart rate and actually help to reduce the abnormal growth (hypertrophy) of the ventricles.

You can live a long time with heart failure if managed appropriately so work with your doctor, take medication as prescribed, eat a healthy diet, minimizing salt intake and get appropriate exercise.

My cousin in Glasgow now 76 was diagnosed with heart failure over 20 years ago. He has since had a new hip and is still out and about on his allotment. He has regular apps; at the hospital. By no means a death sentence. Beta Blockers are NOT blood thinners, I take them as I have a wonky heart. They can make you feel tired though.

There are more than 50 types/kinds of heart diseases and none of them is a death sentence. Continue with her prescribed medication and do the following:

    01. Swallow one clove of fresh garlic early morning daily.

    02. Eat very small pieces of ginger daily (Don't if she also take aspirin)

    03. Give her multivitamins with emphasis on B.Complex sourced preferably from

    natural health stores.

    04. One tea spoon ACV with lukewarm water per day.

    05. Give her walnuts, almonds, flaxseeds and pomergate almost daily.

    06. If she can walk a mile every day that would also be very good for her (consult Dr)

She would live a very long and normal life. Don't worry.

    Cheers

As far as her chances for survival, you need to speak with her doctor or team of doctors. Sit down and write down several questions you have for them and make sure your mom is ok with you talking to the doctors on her behalf. If she is still able to make her own decisions they may not be require to answer you unless they have her permission.

One thing, your mom is in for a HUGE life change. Many things will and must change to improve her quality of life. Her diet will have to change, again speak with the doctor/doctors for more information on this. Her level of activity will have to change, I don't know the whole story so it could be that she needs to take it easy or it could be that she needs to start a regular exercise routine. That's another question you will have to discuss.

As with ANY medical condition, always listen to the doctor. Make sure your mom takes her meds as prescribed. And most important, spend time with her. Even if you're just watching a rented movie together. That's what's most important. Time is the only commodity we can never get back. It's the most precious thing you can ever have.

Good thoughts and good health for your mom. May she enjoy time with you for a long time yet!

my grandfather had the same thing and lived for over 20 years (still alive) on betablockers, they thin the blood and lower the chances of a heart attack.

its a serious condition but it can be helped obviously everyone dies but that diagnosis is not a death sentance
