பணம் PaNam is a Sanskrit word.
பண்யம் A derived word from 'PaNam" meaning saleable commodity, ware
பணயம் - this is the Tamil version of the former word, used to mean 'stake'
The verb root 'paN', in Sanskrit means:
to deal in;to bargain;to bet or stake at play.to risk or hazard (a battle);to win anything at play
It also means to praise, to honour
The predicate form in sentences would be 'PaNate', 'PaNayate' 'PaNayati'.
In Tamil the root 'PaN', means 'old,past' as adjectival use, 'a scale of sounds arranged in order', as noun use, and 'to ripen' as verb.
In current use , பண்டு is in Malayalam meaning ancient, in days of yore;
பண்டைய, in Tamil meaning old, ancient,
பண் in Tamil meaning the scales of music used to sing Thevaaram hymns, as equivalent to the word 'Raga',
பண்ட்லு,in Telugu as meaning 'fruit',
பழு,in Tamil as verb meaning 'to ripen' 'to mature'
பழம் in Tamil as noun, meaning 'fruit',
ஹண்ணு in Kannada meaning' fruit'
All the above can be traced to the Tamil root 'PaN'.
But I am not aware of any usage to mean 'store of val

திரு, THIRU, செல்வம், CELVAM காசு, KASU are the possible three words equivalent to Money in Tamil.
The words, THIRU & SELVAM were widely used by Thiruvalluvar almost two millenniums back itself in several verses.
