Why is the food in Britain so dense compared to American food?
Hi I was wondering why the food here in Britain is so dense and heavy... It got me thinking that maybe there is some kinda scientific expatiation behind it such as the altitude of the two country's being on different levels perhaps as I read that food will taste different on different altitude's The reason why I think that is because like take McDonald's for example, in the UK the McDonald's burgers are kinda on the dense side and in the US McDonald's burgers are light & juicy and more pleasant tasting like I can eat up to 5 or 6 McDonald's burgers in the US but here in the UK the burgers seem dense and I can only manage 3 but yet the same ingredients are used? also goes for (food in general) here in the UK not just McDonald's.
When I was in America I made some cornbread using the same ingredients the same measurements and same technique, my cornbread was real good light and fluffy. I made some cornbread here in the UK. I did exactly the same thing when making my cornbread and it was dense and heavy. I used the same ingredients same technique? This kept on happening when I made cornbread in the UK.
I also know that Britain is famous for its bad food. When I turn on the TV there would be some cooking celebrity show where they would make these really wild wacky awful dish's (mainly what's on British TV now days). The supper markets here in Britain have very basic stuff most of witch comes in a jar or awful tasteless frozen ready made food. It does frustrate me when I'm in a British supermarket and I can't find the ingredients I need to make my southern (American) meals like I have a hard time finding the correct cornmeal for my cornbread and also butter milk isn't easy to find either and pinto beans very very hard to find here in the UK and a bunch of other stuff too.
Well I'm sorry to say this but American food is so much better than British food. American food is not all junk fatty food you know. For those who have never been to America will never know. Its the bad so called American wannabe fast food chains in Britain that give America a bad name. There is a whole lot more to American food other than fast food... Ok maybe I shouldn't of used McDonald's as an example but I feel that's all Brits know. Have any of y'all heard of authentic southern cooking? I've had the privilege to eat lots of southern authentic food. Back in the south they have the best food I've ever had... some thing's you just wont see on TV. The Texas Road House and Long Horn restaurant has food that will blow your mind. Yes there maybe some over weight people in America but there is also lots of skinny people there too. America is a great country.
Oh I forgot to say I was actually born in Britain. A (yank) is somebody from New York not from the south.

No sure I can really answer the question you asked, but wanted to wade in on the debate.
I think it's safe to say that there is bad food in both Britain and the US - both with processed, microwaved food with little flavour. Sadly they are in the more touristy areas - so unless you get out and find other places, you'll be left with the crap.
Also, there are very nice places in both - but for different dishes. So take steaks - I've eaten in a Long Horn restaurant near Boston and it was fantastic-perfectly cooks, great accompanyments, lovely atmosphere and not particularly pricey. However a lot of british places don't do steak very well at all - especially if you have the misfortune to order it in a pub. Some places do, but they are either expensive or hard to find.
Another example - a roast dinner. I have been lulled into these in the US and have been so disappointed - flavourless tough meat, ready made mash, and overcooked veg. However over here any pub worth it's salt will do a great roast dinner.
As for authentic dishes, yes you would struggle to find some ingredients, but same could be said if I was to look for some of the regular things I use. Even things that are available - would find they are different to what I expect - a prime example is cheddar cheese - most stuff in the US is bland and rubbery (though admit there are exceptions - recommend a trip to the Cabot Creamery!).
And for the record - American fast food is better - a big mac over there actually has taste. But there are far better outlets like Johnny Rockets where the taste is actually meat! :)

This is a never ending situation. A Good food loving American comes to Britain and criticizes BAD British food. A Good food Loving Briton goes to America and Criticizes BAD American food. If we all stopped being so stupid and focused on the GOOD FOOD that each of our nations has an abundance of, we might all be a bit wiser.

You're crazy. If you made it with the same ingredients how could it be different? I think you're just trying to put blame on something when really, you just made your cornbread ( whatever the f**k that is) badly that one time. What do you mean basic stuff in the supermarkets in jars and frozen crap. Have you tried the FRESH FOOD aisle! There are other shops other than supermarkets to buy food yaknow. Yes some of the american ingredients are probably hard to find in england, seeing as though you are living in ENGLAND. Duh. Not much you can do. Get on with your life.

We aren't America, so why would our supermarkets sell the same products? All American food is full of corn syrup anyway which is addictive so maybe after stuffing your fat face with 6 burgers at a time, your body craved more which is why you think our food is s**t.

you state Britain is famous for bad food and then quote McDonalds as a spurce. Come on.
American food is trashy, overspiced, oversalted and full of carbohydrates and fat.

most americans are fat maybe because they eat 5 beefburgers you may lose weight if you can only manage 3 here in england.greedy pig
