Why does my vacuum smell funny then shut off?

I was vacuuming some dust that had collected in a spot for awhile and all of a sudden it shut itself off and a puff of smoke came out of the side. I changed the bag and cleaned the beater bar along with all the dust but when I pulled back up it stayed on for like a second and then cut off. And it smells like something is burning but I can't be sure. PLEASE HELP THIS VACUUM IS MY MOTHER'S AND SHE WILL KILL ME!!!! Thank you!

There are two things that kill a vacuum: hair and dust. Hair wraps around the moving parts and eventually heats by friction. You can cut it off with scissors or a sharp knife. Dust gets into bearings and heats them by friction, but it smells like hot oil instead of burning hair. You can't clean bearings, you just throw the vac out and get a new one.

Motor is fried. Mom should understand it isn't your fault. There's nothing you could have done to make burn out.
