Why are some movie sequels horrible?

I'm not talking the script itself, and I know there are a number of sequels that outshined the original. What I'm talking about is the filming and technology and special effects. Two sequels stand out in my mind. The first is Return To Cabin By The Lake, starring Judd Nelson. Many of the shots looked like they were taken with a regular store-bought video camera, then cuts to a more professional shot, then back to amateur-ish shots. The second sequel is Jaws: The Revenge. It's sad when the shark from the original Jaws, made in 1975, looks better and has a more realistic look at death than the shark in a movie made in 1987. I've seen lower-budget movies that have looked much better than these two, and others. What do you think?

One is the director. If the director isn't a big name, the movie will probably have a low budget. A lower budget also impacts what kind of cameras can be used and the actors they are able to afford. Also, the movie rights get sold in some cases, and whatever happens to the sequels is completely up to the new owner of those rights.

In some cases, this is Hollywood (or whoever is responsible) trying to glean off of a popular franchise that was successful before and trying to do so with a really cheap, noticeably bad sequel.

Movie sequels are bad, because the people that designed the first movie ran out of inspiration.

The studios get careless and just end up doing it for the money.
