I hav SleepApnoea &am trying a CPAP machine,hate it,so uncomfortable etc,but worse is I still stop breathing?

Why?

I was soooooo tired last night, I went straight to sleep, but 6 times I woke from not breathing as soon as I dropped off.

Does it mean that a CPAP is not the answer for me?

I slept better without the mask, as I can sleep on my side without it, so was wondering if trying to sleep on my back with the mask, is the problem.... yet often I wake to find myself on my back in the morning.

Or is this just a teething problem? And I do have a cold right now.

    Could be two things:

    1. The pressure of the CPAP isn't high enough to stop you obstructing (could be made worse by the cold) - simple fix by increasing the pressure (I'd increase the ramp time too so you have longer to get used to the higher pressure as you drop off to sleep).

    2. You have a component of central sleep apnoea - this is less likely if you don't obstruct when you change position/lie on your side. If this is the case however the CPAP won't make any difference.

I'd also check the leak settings for the mask to make sure it's actually doing what you think it's doing when you're asleep.
