Should I pay for a game tester website?
I am trying VERY hard to become a game tester. Although, it is very hard as I am on the east coast and none of the game companies near me seem to be looking to hire. I have sent my resume out to a few out of state game companies but have not heard back yet.
I am 24. Male. College Graduate. Have experience with a few Betas and an Alpha test. Fairly intelligent, Good communication skills. I still can't seem to find a break.
Has anyone tried one of these game tester websites where you pay a $40 annual fee (or something like that) and they give you tips/suggestions on what and where you can get work?
PLEASE, only people with an ACTUAL KNOWLEDGE of this situation. I don't need random guesses or an inexperienced person's opinion.

They're scams.
Keep up with the free betas for games but also consider helping test other (non-game) applications that are open source and always looking for testers. Open office, for example.
What's your degree in? If it's in a computer-related field consider broadening your scope to include more jobs. Software testing in general pays better than just games testing and although often have tight deadlines and long hours (if development slips in how long it took to do their work, testing still needs to try to finish in time for the original ship date), other jobs within software testing are not nearly so bad as games testing which often has shift work scheduled for round-the-clock testing. Games testers also get paid quite a bit less than other testers
Start looking into software testing methodology. There's lots of software testing conferences in the New England area, and working towards a certification in software testing may provide you the edge you need to get in. Too many young folks try to get into games testing without even knowing anything about how software testing is done.
Source(s): 13 years in software testing, have hired a number of testers escaping the horrible world of games testing.
