Don't go with him.

Even if you don't know his tastes in things to buy as a gift, he would enjoy a gift basket
filled with some of his favorite snacks. Maybe even some things he could eat on his
trip ,moving. Snack crackers, and cheese spreads, pretzels, candy, assorted nuts in
mini bags. Even a small bag of cheesy popcorn. And those little triangle shaped cheese
in a few varities. You could also add some non edible things. Maybe a new toothbrush,
and a small bottle of mouth wash, razors, and toothpaste. Just anything that would go
into an overnight tote he could take with him. It would be practical, and necessary for
him to take anyway. If you know what his book preferences are, pick up the authors
latest book, and if he flies or takes the train, he will have time to do a little reading.
Think, "a care package, for travel purposes' and that's what it is.

Since he's retiring, he probably has accumulated most of what he has need of. If I were your dad and just moving to Florida, I would probably appreciate a gift card that I could use to buy the things I hadn't anticipated on needing.

Find out what his plans are concerning retirement and get him a gift that he could use spending his retirement days.

If hes is driving get him a prepaid card he can stop and gas up or purchase food along the way so he doesn't have to carry a lot of cash. Or throw him a farewell party with some old friends.

Whatever you do, don't get him a clock or a watch.
What does he like to do? You could get him a fishing pole, a golf club, a tennis racket. Better yet, get him a gift card to a favorite store.

A straw Panama hat, unless he refuses hats. Even if he does, he'll need it in Florida to protect his scalp from the sun. A sample of Xeryus cologne -- not Xeryus Rouge, just Xeryus -- tossed in, for a new take on fragrance, which by the way smells fabulous. To me, anyway.

Look into passes that will allow him to travel and enjoy his new time off:

this is just one example.
