Technically it's three and a thumb, and it's easier to draw in the correct proportions, so it looks better.

There are three types of cartoons. In oldedn days if you see tom and jerry they will be having three fingers and in the middle four and now in latests like avatar 5 because of the technologies development . Those 4 finger cartoons are kowns as S16 technology and 5 fingers are Z19 technology.

Because cartoonists are basically lazy. Take a look at Rembrandt. Five fingers every time. Guaranteed.
