What production centerfire rifles are still offered with rifled sights?

Im mainly asking about bolt action rifles. i thought it would be handy to have a back up rifle in 30-06 in case scope got damaged on other rifle on elk hunts.

I am glad you're planning ahead. I believe that it would be simpler and more convieinent to simply buy an extra scope and quich detach rings for your rifle.

Install one scope, sight it in, then remove it. Then install the second scope and sight it in. This way, its a simple matter to simply replace the scope rather than bring an entire second rifle.

    I live and hunt Alaska

The reason you dont see iron sights on rifles anymore - becasue - they interfer with the proper mounting of the scope. Scopes need to be as low as possible for accuracy - and - having the useless iron sights generally means using a higher scope mount, or, not being able to use a large frot lens scope - that front lense is responsble for gatherning up light in low light conditons like dusk and dawn when game animals are most active. The difference between a 42mm lens and 50mm lens is the difference between seeing a tree, and, seeing a deer in front of tree in early morning light.

You have other choices. Like bring a bore sight with you. You put a piece of tape on the side of the rifle and mark down what the X-Y cordinates are when properly sighted in - and this lets you check your sight when you return to camp.

You could use a gun boot on your atv or a stiffer carry case that protects your rifle better.

Me - I have the gun boots on my ATV to protect the gun. I have the optical bore sight to check my sights when back at camp - and - we always bring a spare rifle. Not a spare for everyone - just one spare 308 or 30-06 for the trip just in case.

If you must have iron sights - look at the ones made my Lyman. These are leaps and bounds better than any of the cheapo's the factories are installing. By buying a rifle with no iron sights - you can have your gunsmith install the Lyman sights where they wont interfere with the scope. Here you get the best of both worlds.

Some good rifles are still available with open sights. I like the Browning BLR;as accurate as the average bolt rifle, has irons but you can get it in 30-06 and other high power cartridges-so you can put a scope on it and be good to 300 yards+,or have no scope and limit you range a bit. You can get older Savage 99s lever gun in 308,and they are a good rifle too.

Rem offers their BDL,CDL rifles with irons-but I rarely recommend getting them because you normally have to pay too much for the non-essential stuff like engraving and end caps. I feel a better option at that level are the CZ rifles and some Rugers.

As mentioned by others, you can have iron sights installed or you can pack a second scope. Luckily I haven't had any issues with scopes over the years.

I was drilling through the Savage cataloge and only found two. The 11/111 Hog Hunter in the Specialty series comes in .308 or .338 Win., no .30-06.

The Scout hides in the Law enforcement series, but only offers .308 Win.

If .308 is less than you need the .338 might do.

What you mean are "iron sights".

There are scopes designed to work above the iron sights but it is a compromise because then the scope is less in line with the barrel, so you have a parallax issue.

You could throw a cheap backup scope in your hunting bag.

Someone beat me to it, but the savage specialty series 'hog hunter' is probably the least expensive iron sighted rifle out there.

But here's the thing...it sounds like you are bringing an whole second rifle for back-up...just put a scope on the back-up rifle.

    or bring a spare scope.

    or get one of these

Every gun maker has a online catlog to search through. All have a model variation with Irons. You can always add sights after market if you wish. For example, Winchester has many models of model 70 rifles. The Alaskan & Safari versions come with Irons Stock. http://www.winchesterguns.com/products/catalog/det...

Ruger, Remington, etc. all have such options. Now, you go search the catalogs.....

Savage makes them with iron sights.

    Remington BDL has them.
