Tooth grinding in a sleeping child?

My 4 1/2 year old daughter grinds her teeth when her sleep is disturbed- if she semi-wakes, is repositioned, rolls over, reaches for a blanket, etc. The grinding is severe and very loud.

It is NOT continuous- just one or two really harsh rasps. (I expect to see a piece of tooth fly-they are THAT loud)

I know these are her baby teeth but this must be damaging. Her dentist said her teeth are fine and suggested lifting her head or changing her pillow so that her head is always supported. She seems to have inherited my restless sleep (including talking) and none of these remedies are helping.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

My oldest son does this as well. Dentist tells me it's very common for children to do and not something to really worry about until they get to having all their adult teeth. I do grind my teeth and have a bite piece I wear, so I was very concerned the first time I heard my son do it too. I already know the damage it can do, but there is nothing they can do for them until the adult teeth are all there either. I think I would just keep an ear out for it as time goes on and hopefully she'll grow out of it as my dentist says my son will eventually when he's older.

My brother used to grind like loopy when he used to be younger, sure it damages the teeth and additional time the teeth grow to be very very small so we can make it rough to floss. The great thing is to go to your dentist or orthodontist, and ask if he could make a grinding gaurd/mildew for your son. It is like a molded tray in your son to wear when he sleeps, and it stops damage of your sons teeth and the sound of his grinding is minimize via alot. Ordinarily humans grind their tooth given that they are burdened, frightened, or simply anxious. You stated he's round 7, so it's ordinarily extra vigour and a encouraged dream he is having. It can be on the whole a subconscious habit. Most persons don't seem to be grinders for life although, so no need to worry an excessive amount of.

warm tea or milk before bed is always helpful.

I have insomnia, so I know a thing about getting to and staying asleep.

playing some calming or soothing music at night, drinking a cup of warm milk, and reading are all very simple and effective. Most health food stores also sell capsules of a chemical in milk that is released when milk is heated, the chemical is the reason warm milk makes people sleepy.

She will need a retainer in the future, once her permanent teeth grow in.

    My son did this too.

In the end, the only answer we got was that is was stress :( His father and I had just separated. It's been a few years now and it has stopped.
