Are long nails needed for adv guitar songs?
Okay I've been looking at some videos on some songs i want to learn: michael, michael, michael by don ross, airtap by erik mongrain, and spiritual groove by antoine dufour.
Specifically in the first song (michael, michael, michael), a video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkidVP0AcQ8) shows him playing it.
When you get a look at his right hand, you can see that pretty much all his fingers have long nails.
Aside from the adequate skill/ practice needed to play the song, are the long nails neccessary? Can the song still be played accurately w/o them? Are there ways around having to grow out your nails?

Many classical guitarist have long nails on their picking hand. Of course the fret hand must be short. In other types of music it is not as common I don't think. I know rock, country and bluegrass players that play finger style without long nails.

We're talking about your fretting hand, right? The basic answer would be NO - your finger tip has to contact the string and the fret board to get a clean sound. Even a slightly long nail ends up digging into the fret board. However, I have seen some ladies hold their fingers flat to avoid the nails - they can't play well, but they can play some basic chords. I think that's what Dolly does.
