Do you think the sex offender registry should be done away with?

It should be done away with because where I'm from very little people ACTUALLY take it seriously here's why:

You have women who have lied about a sexual assault of some sort damaging the credibility of the true victims. Not only have they damaged the true victims credibility, they have also made it easier for the true predators to do what they do because since they figure the said victim would be accused of lying anyway, they know that they more than likely wouldn't pay any attention to the registry since it has been brought to light that many rape accusations are indeed false. Plus anyone who would go around preying on children, or a serial rapist doesn't NEED to be released back into the public. When I was raped back in 2007, the one thing that hurt me the most wasn't the fact that I was raped even though it was a life altering event. It was the fact that there were people that didn't even believe I was raped why might you ask? Because of the idiots going around lying about rape just because they know someone will more than likely believe them. Plus, the guy that raped me would only continue to rape women such as myself if he knew all he had to do was put his name on some stupid registry that most people don't even pay attention to anymore. It's like the boy who cried wolf. Too many rape cases have turned out to be lies, that when someone actually is raped, they're categorized with the dummies that lied about it in the first place. This is just my opinion. If someone is a serial rapist or child molester, why release them into the public ANYWAY? Why not just send them to jail where they belong instead of placing them on a sex offender registry? Opinions?

I really do. Like the other guy said, something only for while they're on parole or probation might be reasonable. But definitely no lifetime registration and none of those stupid restrictions on where they can live. For god sakes, they should be encouraged to start a normal productive life it at all possible, not prevented from it.

I think it should be done away with, permanently.

In it's place the sex offender sentence should include parole or probation that continues until the convict is judged to be no longer a threat to innocent people. If that means 10 years parole, so be it. If that means 50 years parole, the offender had better not miss a check in.

As it stands now ... is the registry a part of the sentence? A separate penalty? How exactly is the sex offender registry classified.

Either it's safe for the offender to live around potential victims without supervision, or they are not. If they are safe, no need to make them part of the registry. If they are not safe, they should be under closer supervision than the registry allows for.

I understand what you're saying. It's really a hard thing to prove(rape) because it's one person's word against another. Once it's proved, it's rare someone spends life in jail for rape aside from a serial rapist. A child molester won't spend a long time in jail so that is why the registry is necessary. What needs to happen is better monitoring of the registry and those iffy situations needs to have an asterisk or something to that affect.

    No.

While not ALL people convicted of crimes are guilty.... the VAST majority are.

The registry serves as public notice of how many sexual deviants are in a particular area. More information is generally better than less.

P.S. There is virtually NO ONE on the registry that did not do prison time for their crime BEFORE being on the registry.

Not only that.... but a sex criminal failing to let people and law enforcement know where they are (a strong indicator that they are up to their old ways again) is a crime unto itself.... and will get the offender sent back to prison.

There's something that I think gets lost in discussions like this. The names and details of ALL convicts are a matter of public record. So the notion that having a public shaming list is going to keep neighborhood's safe, especially in the Internet age, is just ridiculous. If you think that this public information is helpful, but only if you don't have to pay for it, then you are a hypocrite.

I think that about 10% of people in prison are not guilty of the crime that they were convicted of!
