If alcohol helps w LDL why not drink?

"Drinking alcohol has been shown to decrease levels of HDL cholesterol and alcoholic beverages can reduce the risk of blood clots, according to the American Heart Association, but you should not begin drinking alcohol simply to obtain these benefits."

Why not "begin drinking" if it can help me?

Lipid (cholesterol etc) metabolism is a very complex process which we try distill to the basics of LDL, vLDL, HDL, etc. in order to help us understand how it affects our bodies. The reality is that we don't really understand as much as we like to think.

With the issue of alcohol consumption, it seems that there can be some benefits in terms of raising HDL ("good" cholesterol) and perhaps lowering LDL ("bad" cholesterol)...however as the saying goes: "everything in moderation." Alcohol is metabolized in the liver and that is also where cholesterol metabolism takes place. We know what happens to the liver with too much alcohol, and so disorders with cholesterol will occur with liver problems. Weight gain with too much alcohol is also common which is associated with triglyceride problems.
