Seniors. Shell suits, worst fashion?

The survey commissioned by online retailer isme.com asked 2000 women over 50 to vote for their least liked fashion trends.

The shell suit was voted the worst fashion faux pas of the past 50 years

The shell suit, popular in the 80s and early 90s, came in at number 1 with a staggering 91% of votes. The item, which was also jokingly worn by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's character Ali G, was closely followed by the Spandex mini skirt at 88% and dungarees at 73%

I have mine on right now together with my leg warmers and head boppers. I would put my baseball cap on as well, but that means I would have to cut holes them and thread the head boppers through. That's not good for the burberry.

Shell suits were awful, but any sports wear worn for anything other than sports loos so bad, track suit bottoms - yuk. What has to be one of the worst fashion things ever is this thing about wearing trousers low slung with your backside and underwear showing. It makes the wearer look stupid male or female and I don't like seeing tacky underwear and butt cracks. Hipster trousers and skirts that lie on the hips are fine but anything lower than that is just nasty .

I remember how cool my sister-in-law thought she was when she sported one, the kind that made noise when you walked. I never had one.I didn't care for the noise and really preferred jeans or other pants along with a shirt. I have to say that "dungarees" which I believe means jeans, shouldn't be on that list, they can be dressed up or down....the ones with pre-purchase holes and tears should be on the list though.

*A slender tall young man came into the store where I used to work back in March wearing an all-white shell suit, along with a half-dozen heavy silver-colored chains and pendants around his neck and a pair of dark-tinted sunglasses. He looked like he was dressed for a costume party, and it was about 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, he came to return merchandise. I only wish I had a photo to illustrate how he looked in that get-up.

I agree about the dungarees, known as bib overalls, or 'bibbies' here. Especially if a guy is wearing no shirt or if a female is only wearing a halter top underneath. So ugly. Platform shoes and Nehru shirts. I don't recall seeing many shell suits......and like Martha says...'It's a good thing.'

They have never been out of fashion in Barnsley. I even saw one man in a shell suit with black, highly polished shoes in Barnsley. What a laugh. He was probably the Lord Mayor!!

I had NO idea what you meant so I looked up pictures. Oh, My, Goodness. I remember seeing them and thinking how ugly! Nowadays I see women shopping in their pajama bottoms and that almost looks worse. What are they thinking? I always thought of dungarees as being just plain pants or jeans. Jeans will never go out of favor, IMHO.

I never heard of a Shell suit until now. It appears to be a style for men. Few styles could top this, unless it is the huge baggy pants worn by MC Hammer and the leisure suits for men.

Oh yehr! Couldn't agree more. Those I never likes. Closely followed by dungarees. Hideous!

I bought one in neon lime green in my jogging days. I still cringe at my chutpah trotting down the road in that abomination.

It didn't allow you to sweat out properly and as a result, I almost passed out on the road. I actually found it when I was packing to move to Georgia. I had almost forgotten (blocked) that memory.
