Most nosebleeds are not serious . Many are idiopathic - that is there is no obvious cause.
Anterior nosebleeds make up more than 90% of all nosebleeds. They usually originates from a blood vessel on the nasal septum, where a network of vessels converge.
Causes can include exposure to warm, dry air for prolonged periods of time, allergic reaction, deviated septum, nose picking, sinus infections, vigorous nose blowing.
Adding moisture to air can help - a humidifier or pan of water near a heater.
A little vaseline smeared inside the nostrils to stop them drying out.
when he gets a bleed (epistaxis) make sure he holds his head forward as swallowing blood can cause vomiting. Give him a cold compress to put on the bridge of his nose, tell him to pinch it for around 10 minutes.

When I must have been about 4 years old, a girl twice as tall as me ice skating backwards knocked me down and giving me a bloody nose. Ever since then (currently age 60), I occasionally get nosebleeds in my right nostril, primarily if I get a head cold or allergies and blow my nose a lot. In a way maybe that is a good thing, because if I get high blood pressure that, would tend to relieve the pressure instead of bursting a blood vessel in my brain (I knew someone younger that me who died of a brain aneurysm).
My mother tested me for allergies when I was little which did not reveal anything. I did not realize what I was allergic to until working part time in college when I discovered that when I walked into tall grass going to seed, I could not stop sneezing. So in IL or WI I am bothered with grass allergies from about Memorial Day through 4th of July. Strangely in South Dakota the natural prairie grass did not bother me at all despite eternal breezes, but the government spec grass at Ellsworth AFB made my eyes look like road maps until I took an antihistamine.

He's young and it's common for children to be sensitive or allergic to simple household items, especially carpet. I would first suspect allergies, but if he begins having other symptoms such as headaches and/or dizziness, he should see a doctor immediately. The bleeding could be coming from something more serious.
