Why do people do things if Death will take everything away?

Why do some people like Leonardo Da Vinci, or Albert Einstein seek to know more about the Universe if death will take their knowledge away? I don't understand this... how can people sit idly and do things that death will take away anyway? I'm kind of jelous of those people, because I'm always worried about death when deciding on a purpose/goal, which makes me see everything as irrelevant... How do these people do it? What's the meaning in finding more about the Universe if death will ultimately take all this knowledge away? I can't understand how finding knowledge about the Universe will be meaningful once we die... How should human beings face up to death? And how can their knowledge and search for knowledge be relevant if they're going to die anyway?

I posted this question a while before as well, but it seems that people have misunderstood it. Firstly, a finite experience is worth it simply because you exist after it. So the argument that playing chess or learning are useful/worth it only exists if we assume that we exist AFTER those experiences. They are worthy only in light of our posteriority. For example, learning to drive is worth it or useful ONLY if I assume that I exist afterwards to use it. But death takes our existence away (at least from our current state). Thus how can any finite experience/learning be useful/worth it??? Then the other argument that we leave a legacy behind... so what? Do you exist to witness the legacy? Again leaving a legacy behind (influencing other people) is only relevant TO YOU if YOU EXIST!!! If you don't exist, why is leaving a legacy important? And thinking about it, you'll exist for 70-80 years on average, and then disappear for an eternity or a very long period of time (assuming religious beliefs are true). So the large part of "you" will be non-existence. Why would legacy be that important? Why would you care? If you don't exist anymore who will be there to witness your legacy? Also how can you enjoy something when you know that soon you will not be able to enjoy it anymore... the whole fact that you will LOSE this enjoyment spoils it. The fact that you know that soon you won't be able to do things you enjoy makes them rotten... it's like showing food to a hungry dog but keeping it high enough that he can't reach it. It's torturing... So how can we humans avoid this? What am I missing? What's wrong with my argument?

A very good question, While we where the is life the is is death, and being the humans that we are we strive to a greater purpose "what makes the world around us" the people you mentioned at the top of your question Albert Einstein is said to have discovered Electricity ( He just re-discovered it ) turns out that electricity was back in time of the Egyptians. you'll find out that he also worked in a patient office where he may or may-not have abused his position. well anyway that is also why we leave records on our notes so it may continue by someone else. Some people what the simple life, some want a different and some choose a life on why people do the things that they do. All in all everything has an ending, in whatever time that you have you may want to make yourself better then you are now. Example: way back in the 12th century in China we have an old man who is up every morning and walks down to a lake where he sits and meditate. One day he noticed a Crane protecting its nest against a wolf, with her wings extended out and one leg balanced on the ground the Crane kick the Wolf on the nose every-time it made an attack finally the Wolf gave up to find a meal some place else. some Chinese say that this is where KUNG-FU came from or the way a Mantis fights. long story short People make themselves better through many different ways, Having Kids you child knows more then you think they do about some of the things that you know. Example: If your an Artist on Drawing and Painting, on or all of your Children will have this Idea inside of them, if the chose to be an artist too or just to dabble in it they will have a better understanding of it then you or it will be much easier for them to visualize there creations. ( Masterpieces ) if you thought of that question above you should have no problem following this answer. Good Luck! and Keep An Open Mind So it can Expand too :-)

What you know for certain is that your mind and consciousness will no longer animate your body once the life processes within it cease to function. However, it can not be said with absolute certainty that the memories you have accumulated during your experience as a human being will not continue to exist as some configuration of energy or perhaps even something completely non-physical.

Consider that if the soul or spirit is not just a myth its most basic essence would be memory. There is no self identification without the ability to recall. If the soul or spirit is non-physical there would be no requirement for it to be contained within the human brain or body. There is a theory called the Primacy of Consciousness, which basically states that energy and matter are the creation of thought. The universe exists because we perceive it. Further, the theory states that if we did not exist then the existence of the universe would be completely irrelevant.

At one time it was said that if we were meant to fly we would have been born with wings. Perhaps what is “meant” for us is limited only by our imagination. Maybe being human (and our self imposed limitations) is just an idea to our consciousness and not a prison for it.

I think everyone's personal beliefs will weigh heavily on their answers. Here is mine:

Time is an illusion as everything is infinite. There is no end to anything, therefore there is never an end to who YOU are. Everything that exists has already existed and will always continue to exist. You will never NOT exist. Therefore everything that you have done and ever will do will be taken with you. Like a memory that you can pull from your mind at any given moment about your past experiences right now in this life, you will be able to pull from that pool of what you have achieved and be able to use it to plan for whatever adventure you want to take on next.

Personally, I also believe in reincarnation. I don't think it's possible for us to truly experience all that life has to offer in just one lifetime, particularly for those who die early. Seriously...how many experiences can an infant/child have with just one life? So who is to say that if you achieve something great, that you won't be here to enjoy your own legacy later? The fact that it can help others is just a bonus.

I don't think death takes anything away from us. In fact, quite the opposite. I think death will be a reawakening of sorts, to be able to remember the full of what we are without the direct focus of a single lifetime like we have right now. Nothing we do will ever be a waste.

Death didn't take all of Leonardo's and Einstein's knowledge away. We still have some of it and pass it down to future generations.

People do things to help the evolution of the human race, and each valuable bit of progress lives on after the people die. If no one did anything because of death, we'd still be living in caves. What is valuable, lives on. The rest needs to be wiped away to make room for further progress; otherwise, there'd be oceans of useless knowledge floating around.

You conceive of yourself as existing only for yourself, not for future generations. There's sort of an epidemic of that kind of thinking today. People didn't used to think that way; your question would have dumbfounded most people a hundred years ago.

Ok then , what would you as a substitute do to spend your lifestyles ? Fritter it away or do something constructive even if you best live a relatively brief time ? Although dying overtakes us and we go away at the back of what now we have entire , it doesn' t imply that lifestyles has no that means . The which means of life lies in our pursuit of happiness which is the only factor we seek for itself . There may be nothing we can do about delivery and loss of life save to benefit from the interval . On account that this might be the one existence we will be able to ever live , doesn' t it make sense to make full use of it and make the exceptional of it with the aid of leaving a legacy for our descendants ? As a result , the arena used to be made a greater location to live in in view that we handed with the aid of . Despite the fact that we're mortals , we end up immortal in the recollections of those we depart in the back of .

BECAUSE THATS NO HOW IT WORKS

in theory your argument is valid but in reality it is not.

its curiosity that keeps us going, we dont know how we got here and we dont know why we are here, we know we are going to die but we still want to find out and experience more of this place before our time is up.

its not really about leaving a legacy its about doing what you can with what you have, its just simply because nobody is going to just DIE.. just cause they know they are going to die.

like me, I dont have any goals i want to set, and idc if i set some legacy, this is my time and I want to make the best of it, whether that is experiencing things or discovering things. I want to do what ever I can with the time that I have, and I really dont have a reason either, because life has no explanation and nothing really has a reason or purpose.

All we do is try to spend the short time that we have to the fullest.

the reason is that the everything in the universe follows the law of evolution, from a simple form to a more complex one. think about it, our planet wasnt alway here, it took billions of years of evolving from some simple particles that were floating in space then they started to collide and by combining with each other they started to form more complex scructures then eventually some spiraling nebulas formed and heating up nuclear reactions started to create stars that eventually made matter rotate around them and in billions of years this matter clustered and clustered more together till ball shaped structure started to form and by spinning around the star they became rounder and rounder until basically they become planets and on some special planets some random combinations made it possibile for the first particles to autoreplicate and from simple mono cellular beings through billions of years and through evolution some auto replicating particles figured out how to have sex or in other words splicing different particles together to form new particles that were different and basically after sex was discovered by these self replicating particles, sex continued for billions of years and become each time more complex until eventually jellyfish formed, then fishes then at the same time plants on the surface and then bugs and meanwhile fish started to emerge and go out of the water and started walking then mammals started to walk the earth then evolution of the fighttest basicallly started and this brought to some humongous muscle like creatures such as the dinosaurs but then a random event maybe a earthquake maybe a ice age maybe aliens maybe a meteorite struck the earth and all the dinosaur died then evolution said **** lets see if there is another way to survive and basically it made monkeys that then started to use rocks as weapons and the monkeys became the dominant species that walked through the earth. at one point the monkeys started to form groups and each group started to created a form of communication for example they indicated with their fingers a tree and they said tree and slowly language started to emerge from simple words to super complex structurres like today so u see evolution is the law that permeates the universe. anyway after a while when language was fully developed monkeys finally turned into humans this happened when the first humans started to realize they existed. now the law of evolution keeps on happening to humans too even if they are not aware of it, from small villages to giant mega cities, from groups of tribes to nations, everything follows this law... until one day a meteorite will hit the earth and everything will start over again, this has happened many times.. and so far only one race managed to evolve enough before it was destroyed by a random event, their are aliens and they watch upon us. they help us sometimes

Because while you are here, you may assign value to the present knowledge that future generations will remember your name, among a thousand other arbitrary ways in which you may assign importance and achieve happiness.
