I crashed a golf cart and?

The Ultimate in Humility here...I work at a golf course and while I was heading back to the pro shop after I was done playing..I hit a low tree trunk while waving to another employee. I hit the tree and the cart did a wheelie and bent back the roof arch support on the passenger side and scraped the roof as well. I was so embarrassed. I immediately went to the Director of the golf course and told him what I did. He wasn't mad and thanked me for telling him as I told him I would pay for the damages. He said he would call me back and let me know after a call to the dealer. I know this will cost me several hundred dollars to fix. I am prepared to do so. I just don;t want to lose my job. I am a great reliable employee and am never late and go in everytime on short notice when needed. I wonder if a letter of apology would be appropriate? I just feel so humiliated by the whole thing.

Do you know how thankful I would be if my employee told me, voluntarily, that he did this? If I were your boss this would have shown me an awful lot about your maturity level and you would be held in higher regard in my eyes after such a thing. I'm sure you don't make much at that job, and offering to pay is a huge deal. I wouldn't make you pay for it because you were so up front about it. Accidents happen. Don't go all formal with the written note. Your honesty should be rewarded and I highly doubt that you will lose your job over this. You passed a big test of character with flying colors.

Yeah...that's kind of embarrassing. However, you did the right thing b telling them what happened. Most people would just try to cover it up and lie about it if anything every became of it. I doubt that you will lose your job or have to pay for the damages. I am sure that they have insurance for these type of things. You may however receive a written warning about your actions. Not a huge deal just dint let it happen again.

You are not obligated to pay. Stuff happens. They have insurance. Offering to pay makes it kinda awkward as your boss may hold you to it. If so, pay and take your lickins. This should not have anything to do about your loosing your job.
