Need some ear stretching advice?

I've had my ears stretched for years and was at 5/8" and had to take my plugs out because one of my ears suddenly got very angry for no reason; red warm and a little swollen, no infection or anything though. I also wore stone plugs exclusively. I took them out and they shrunk pretty significantly so I decided not to re stretch them. It's been quite some time and now my ear gauges are two different sizes, 0G and 00G. The smaller one is the angry one and in my attempts to slowly stretch it so I can get a matching pair have been unsuccessful. It seems like the skin is just so thin that even when I used a taper that actually is 0G (so my ear is just shy of that it seems) there has already been the slightest tearing inside the lobe. Up until this point I never had any problems stretching, my lobes are healthy and I don't understand why I'm having such a problem. Should I continue to try stretching or just live with the mis-matched lobes?

Update:

rachel, terribly unhelpful answer. also, only improperly stretched earlobes get infected.

There could be scar tissue built up from the first time you stretched. Invest in good vitamin e oil, jojoba, or emu and start massaging your lobes atleast twice daily. It will help loosen them up. The stone plugs will also help loosen them up with the weight. Just take your time and it will be worth it in the end when they eventually loosen up.

Keep stretching it and it will get infected (if it isn't already). Also, google pictures of old people with stretched lobes....not attractive.
