What is a HND? Please explain it :)?

What exactly is a Higher National Diploma? I recently asked a question about getting a job in engineering and one of the answers said 'I prefer employing a HND man to a degree man'. But what is it?

Thanks in advance :)

Update:

Ahh I see thank you, can these be done at a college? and is a BTEC diploma level 3 a HND?

:)

An HND takes just two years and is more practical when related to the subject, i.e. Accountancy, you number crunch a lot but do not go very deeply into the theory.

A degree takes three years and you would do more theory work. The HND is more about proficiency for your future chosen job, You can receive a merit in all individual HND subjects, which show you are better than average. If you excel in your HND you can transfer to a Degree.

From prospective employers view, an HND shows that you have a good working knowledge of how to do your chosen job. A degree however might mean that you could gain promotion in your chosen field more quickly.

A level 3 BTEC is not the same as an HND. A level 3 qualification is equivalent to an A level.

    Hope this helps.

Higher National Diploma: a diploma given for vocational training that prepares the student for a career in a particular area; good students may progress to a course leading to a degree.

next step down from a degree (PHD etc) simply highest level on offer without having to attend a university ( open university accepted) it tends to have a more practical aspect . eg hands on approach
