Not everyone has the toolkit required to constantly be thoughtful, honest and focused on meaningful and self-directed goals.
Those who don't have no choice but to try achieving happiness, not by improving humanity, but simply by enforcing and strengthening the status quo.
I don't believe it's actually a conscious choice.

I don't think anyone necessarily wants to be shallow, it's just how they were raised/taught so it's all they know.

Several people want other to live up to their standards in personalty or style in order to feel comfortable. If they don't feel awkward, you can't help but insult the other person.
