Higgs Boson - Why GOD Particle?
I know it was called The God Particle in a publication a while ago, but I am having trouble understanding what the Higgs Boson has to do with God, at all. I am pretty scientifically ignorant, but I try!
I recently read the book "Science and Religion", by John Haught, and I really enjoyed it. The correlation of the two is very interesting to me. I'm just having trouble grasping this Higgs Boson.
Thanks.

I asked my dad about this. He is a Rabbi and a physicist. He said "it really doesn't have anything to do with G-d". He is firm believer in G-d and firm believer in science but he is also honest. He said it is just the way they are referring to it and he wishes they would stop. Then he tried to explain it to me but well....lets just say I am not scientifically gifted. LOL. I trust him though that "it has nothing to do with G-d" and this is a man who firmly believes in G-d (we are Orthodox Jews) so I think he is being non-biased anyway.

The Higgs Boson has nothing to do with the idea of gods- science in general has nothing to do with the idea of gods. One physicist used the term in the title of his book, and the media ran with it. The phrase actually irritates scientists because it confuses the layperson greatly.
The Higgs Boson discovery basically explains why all matter has mass. In the Standard Model of particle physics, the BEH Boson (another name for the Higgs boson) is an elementary particle with huge mass that decays almost immediately after formation- which is why it could only be found with an extremely high energy particle collider like the CERN Large Hadron collider.
Just a few days ago, the two main experiments at CERN independently recorded the existence of a previously unknown particle with a mass consistent with the hypothesized mass of the Higgs Boson. Research will of course be ongoing to determine whether this is in fact the Higgs Boson or a previously undetermined particle, and whether its activity fits with that predicted by the Standard Model.

The "god particle" has nothing to do with God. Even the term "god particle" is used by the Media to sell TV news, newspapers and magazines and is not used by Science. Scientists call this particle the Higgs boson.
Just like every other scientific discovery in the history of mankind, this neither proves nor disproves the existence of God or God's Creation of the Universe.

The Higgs Boson gives matter its mass, or structure.

Like someone else already said,it was original called the "God damned particle" since it was so hard to find.Except you can't really use damned on the news.
Besides,it'll attract more attention.

This is all explained at the wikipedia article.
It has nothing to do with God.

It's just a silly term for something that gives matter it's mass. Would have been better if they gave it a better name.
