NASCAR half time show?

Who do you agree with? Nick Margiasso says yes to the idea of half time in NASCAR, and Mark Aumann says no. What do you say to this idea?

I have to answer this as a "casual" fan, meaning I catch parts of races here and there, highlights once in a while, and sometimes race results on Yahoo. I'm a "casual" fan because the races are just too damn long to sit through. 2+ hours of watching 40 or so cars "turning left" for 500 miles is too much to ask. You get to the point where things are running "smoothly" (i.e. monotonously) that you start wanting somebody to wreck just to see something...freaking HAPPEN! Obviously, we don't want any of the drivers to get hurt, but lap after lap after lap after lap of just "turning left" gets boring.

A halftime break would help tremendously. I see the diehard fans opposing this radical notion and I do understand it. But for those of us who aren't gearheads and would just like to see a good race, give us a break in the middle. It's not an endurance race for the FANS. Give us some time to hit the bathroom, grab a sandwich, get a beer, etc. Also give the drivers the time to take a leak, drink some water, eat a banana, etc. This also gives them time for face-to-face strategy meetings with their Crew Chiefs.

The tracks can host various types of "halftime shows" for those who don't need a bathroom break or a sandwich. Wouldn't be any problem at all filling the void of "not racing" for however long they would determine halftime to be.

They also don't have/need to "reset the scoreboard" after halftime. The simple fix is whoever was leading before halftime gets a 10-15 second head-start after halftime, so he would still be in the lead. They could either start the rest of them like they do at the beginning of the race, or start them in the same positions they were in at halftime. Getting that 10-15 second head-start after halftime is certainly incentive enough to "win" the first half of the race and would make it just as competitive as the second half.

This isn't just "going with the flow" and doing something because "everybody else is", this is giving the drivers and the spectators (live and at home) a break in the middle of something that takes a long time to complete. "Everybody" does that because repetitiveness and monotony lead to loss of focus, impaired judgement, boredom, and injuries.

    I agree with Margiasso.

Aumann. It is not an event on a clock like football, basketball, and hockey. You don't see halftimes in sports like tennis, golf, and baseball and there shouldn't be no halftime in NASCAR either.

Didn't we try this with the Truck series in it's early days? As well as the All Star Race and the Bud Shootout until recently?

It didn't make much of a difference. And it won't. The races are fine the way they are today.

  • looks like to be a stupid idea, just leave the races be as is, with the only time the race is stopped in the middle is under a red flag due to rain or a bad wreck or track conditions being bad.

    dumbest idea ever.

it was hated in truck racing (back when they first started, for those that remember), and it's hated during the all-star race.

if they want to break it up - then they need to break it up into three separate races/heats, and the accumulate points in each race to come up with the overall winner. but that would make it terribly confusing for the fans at the track, and mindboggling confusing for the commentators to keep up with for the on-air/tv viewers.

I say no. One of the reasons I do not like other sports as much is because of 'half-time' atrocities that fans have to sit through. I do not want a Madonna nipple, I want racing!

Such a stupid idea, but nothing from Nascar would surprise me now. These idiots are the same people that came up with the lucky dog and the chase.

That's an excellent way to run off fans.
