In your opinion does this nickname work?
Ok, so my name is Bethan, I love my name, but I prefer Bethany. Would it be weird for me to lengthen my name as a nickname... idk how to explain that?

I think I get what you're saying.
You don't want to make a legal name change, but you just want people to call you Bethany, even though your name is Bethan? Basically just adding "y" to your current name, and saying it's a nickname?
I think you can absolutely do this. Plenty of dimunitives are longer than their original name, and you can definitely go by any name you want to, whether it "works" or not!
Ann --> Annie
Ann --> Annette
Alice --> Alison
Elle --> Ellie
Rose --> Rosie
John --> Jack
Annamaria --> Anya
etc.
If you want to be called Bethany, then I'm sure you can get people to do so. As with any name change, you will probably have to correct people a few times until they get it, but eventually they will learn!
Good luck, and hope this helped. :)

I like your name but no it's not that strange, to want to be called Bethany,
I take my first and middle name, and thats what I go by at work or they call me Mar-bear for some reason lol.. There are just to many people at work named Mary. So it can't be to much stranger that me taking my names and combining them to Mary Elizabeth

I think Bethany is cute. Sometimes nicknames are longer than the original name, especially if it is one like I know a kid named Jed and they call him Bubba. I know a girl named Denise and they call her Dee-Dee.
