My laptop is running extremely slowly?
Hi, I have a slight problem with my laptop at the moment as it seems to be running a lot slower than it usually does. I constantly de-fragment it, scan it and use 'CCleaner' amongst other tools. I haven't installed anything recently but it is almost like it is on power saver mode all the time without realising it (One example of why I have this inclination; when I used to put it on power save mode for instance, sometimes songs would be jumpy on itunes, now it seems to be doing it all the time even though I'm on high performance). So basically I was wondering if anyone has an idea what it could be. I was wondering if it could possibly be to do with my fan being slightly clogged, therefore putting it in power saver mode as it can't cool down properly? I say this because my laptop shut down around about 6-8 weeks ago due to overheating and after blowing on the fan to remove as much dust as I could it started again and the speed issue could well have coincided with that particular event.
Just in case here are a few bits of the spec;
Toshiba
Operating system is Vista.......
4gb RAM
Celeron(R) Dual-Core (I know pretty pants huh)
T300 @ 1.8GHz 1.79GHz
I know it isn't the greatest laptop but I stress it ran fairly adequately for me for about 3 years and all of a sudden it's like I have a Commodore 64 or something (no disrespect to Commodore of course)
Anyway sorry for rambling, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Rory

Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your Toshiba laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the Toshiba . This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your Toshiba on.
Boot in "safe mode". As it starts up press F8, the computer ask you if you'd like to start in safe mode. Highlight "safe mode" and press enter. See if your Toshiba is booting up ok .
If your Toshiba laptop boots ok, do the following,
Try System Restore first,
Start Menu->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. Choose the most recent date before you the encountered problem. If it doesn't work, try the next date.
If System Restore does not fix it, as a last resort, you might need to fdisk, reformat your Toshiba laptop hard disk clean and reinstall OS, that usually fixes all bugs. Before going that route, try following,
Uninstall unnecessary programs and applications.
Scan with a antivirus program
Scan with a spyware/malware program

Clean up and repair registry problems with registry repair software of your choice
If the problem persists, did you check if it could be your Toshiba power cord or power source problem? Defective or insufficient power supply might cause error messages that are misleading. Take the battery out and power on your Toshiba with the charger only. Make sure your Toshiba power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Did you notice the power jack loose? You can find Toshiba power jack on ebay. Fixing and soldering the power jack requires professional skill though. The charger green/blue LED should be on. If not, replace the defective charger. Both Toshiba battery and charger, especially its power cord/cable, need to be replaced every few years, consider buying a lifetime warranty charger online from company like topmic

A RAM upgrade is a great step in improving your computer performance. But often hardware addition don't always give as much speed as one would like. You need to perform a few maintenance task to make sure that you can get the most out of your recent RAM upgrade and improve your PC performance.
Firstly, if you haven't cleaned your registry (http://oppctools.com/ ) in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.
2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs. Check the link to alter your virtual memory spec.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.

You might try deleting software as you might off added on too much and overloaded the hard drive.
Also, here is why it is never a good idea to save personal documents (such as papers, spreadsheets or even photos) on a hard drive. It eats away hard drive space and makes computer run really slow
In any case, the only thing that should go on a computers hard drive should be software. Everything else should go on a flash drive. If not for any other reason, you will still have your stuff if the laptop happens to break down

The only other thing I can think of is adding more RAM. that should help with speed.
