I too, don't understand why people believe in 'God'

Here is my argument to contribute to this discussion:

We can't believe that there is a God - and we can't believe that there isn't a God. But we can look at both sides of the argument and weigh up the evidence from both sides and come to a logical conclusion. However, due to the fact that there is an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence against a God, we can safely assume that in this moment in time, God doesn't exist. Science is subject to change and 100 years down the line scientists might prove that there was a being who came to Noah's aid and together, they somehow managed to keep woodpeckers, woodlice and a variety of other wood-attacking creatures on a WOODEN boat that somehow managed to stay afloat. But now, in living the 21st century where science is at it's greatest - it is more logical to believe that the bible is a myth and so is this supposedly 'higher' being.

I'm not saying that a man named Jesus isn't real, because there are actually Jewish records that mentions a man named Jewish who was punished and killed. But I need to clarify that the name Jesus was only mentioned once in these records - and if Jesus/God was such an important, omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent being, why is his name only mentioned once?

Also, if there happens to be a God - We need to raise the fact that there are lost scriptures (that were later found documented, I believe in the 18th-20th century) that were REFUSED to be written into the bible because it portrayed this 'God' in a bad light. This is certain proof that the bible has been tampered with and changed into something that could be far from the truth. These scriptures included:

    1) That this God being was in fact gay - he had homosexual tendencies towards his disciples. Strange isn't it? That Christianity preaches that Homosexuality is wrong when God -the centre of the Christian belief- has homosexual tendencies himself.

    2) There was a book where Jesus had sex with a prostitute, if God is a higher being and is meant to be different to us, humans. Then surely God must have separate desires; he shouldn't be feeling lust towards a woman.

    3) In another book Jesus was blessing clay doves with sacred water that turned them into live doves. A young boy came over and kicked the bucket of water over, in rage, Jesus killed the boy on the spot. Later, the boys father confronted Jesus about this and Jesus crippled the sons father. Is this really what an all-loving God should me like?

Before you Theists come along and say "Well, of course God is real. He's everywhere" you need to look at religion from another point of view. Even if there is a God, then this God is a very flawed God with carnal desires.

FYI, the word "docent" doesn't mean "doesn't."

As to why people believe in a god, I can't answer for others. I believe in a God because that belief fits the available evidence about human nature and our relationship to the universe better than any alternative I have found, and because that belief motivates actions I consider desirable. I believe in a God because that belief is part of being who I choose to be.

There is not a bit of proof, of any sort, that God doesn't exist. If you think otherwise, then you're just a lot less rigorous about your proofs than I am.

We find God by a spiritual path, not in a physical way.

Finding God is a different experience for each one but usually there are some basic common features. The right attitude is essential, if a person is a 'know-all' and takes the stand that there is no God - period, it is unlikely that he will ever discover God.

Some people who have been seriously worried about their confusion re religion or their unbelief, have called out to a God they do not yet believe in and He floods them with an experience of being specially loved! This is totally life-changing, but it does not happen immediately to every confused person who cries out!

Some have searched and longed for God for decades before they have experienced an enlightenment, vision or conversion.

My husband started with a vague belief in the existence of God, through studying the marvels and intelligence behind creation, but at the age of 66yrs Christ came to him and he saw God's throne in heaven. That scene faded and he was guided to confess his sins, then the Holy Spirit appeared like a soft white form, not describable, just the size to cover him (in bed at the time) He felt incredibly loved and also felt cleaned inside, as though he was made pure. He cried with joy, his tears spurting from the corner of his eyes! He now hears from God fairly often.

God speaks to me usually through words in the Bible, especially when I have a particular need; it is just like he speaks the words to me out loud with a comforting pat on the shoulder! It is that real!

It is the most wonderful thing to be in touch with Almighty God - I never stop marvelling at the Joy and Wonder of it! I love to hear similar accounts from my friends - and in mutual understanding we just beam at each other in sheer pleasure! Some times we laugh in happiness.

I go to an informal house fellowship - we share the days events, enjoy a joke or a tease, pray for whoever needs prayer - read the bible, worship - and it is all mixed up and natural!

God is a symbol of how we stand in relationship to everything else. Imagine that you can symbolize your perception of reality and connect it to its source.

People still sense that life has a meaning - that we do certain things which belong to a higher plan than the one we can perceive.

They say when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains must be the truth. So much as there is a slim chance that God exists, he still has the chance to be true.

mate if your going to make an argument like that then you should at least have some descent facts to back it up and did you know that there is actually more proof in books that jesus existed than Caesar him self so don't be an absolute tool ok.

First of all, if you do believe what your saying you shouldn't use HE. Because if there is a god its not some man looking down on us. Honestly, i think everyone's a little skeptical. I think it's really just so they have some form of hope.

Actually, the "proof" that exists (ex. evolution) are actually only theories. I believe because He has shown himself real in so many lives and in my life. I've known people who have been prayed over in the name of Jesus over healing of things such as cancer and been completely healed. I have faith, that's all.

It is not whether you believe in God but whether you believe God.

There is a vital and tremendous difference, which you fail to appreciate.

    Because God exists.

He does not exist because we say He does; He is independent of our proclamations. He does not exist because we want Him to exist; He is independent of our desires. He does not exist because in our ignorance, we insert God in order to explain the unknown; He is independent of our ignorance. No. God exists because He is. We Christians have experienced Him, felt Him, and know Him. We can see His hand in our lives. We see the circumstances of life move and be moved to bring us to answers that we know are from Him. We sense Him our prayers and our lives. We see Him work in the lives of others. We watch as He answers prayer and confirms in our own hearts His love for us. We know He exists because He exists.

The Bible speaks of God and does not defend His existence. It simply asserts it. Sometimes there are simply things you cannot prove to someone else, but you know. Yes, this is subjective, but it is often true.
