Getting lean vs getting big?

Hey, so I'm a relatively small guy, and I want to start lifting weights. However, I don't want to get huge, I just want to get lean and trim. Is there any way to go about this, like calorie deficits, or do I have to bulk first and then cut? Basically, how can I get lean and muscular without getting overly big, which would look weird on me since I'm so short?

Getting "big" is exceptionally difficult. Simply beginning a workout routine is not going to be enough to allow you to get big overnight. If it were, there would be a lot more big people. You do not need to bulk-cut either. Start lifting and increase your calories. You need calories to build muscle. If you are currently overweight, you should restrict your diet more, but it doesn't sound like you are.

You should just start lifting and lift smart. You will not get big any faster than anyone else. That takes years of work. Just lift smart and watch your calories in/out.

If you are like most people and just think that "fit" means cut with abs, then that is all calorie restriction. While this is what most people want, it is not actually any indication of fitness. Just start lifting, eat right, and don't worry.
