What is the point in believing in an eternal afterlife?

Humans need to die. Living eternally is the biggest hell I could ever imagine. You wouldn't have anything to look forward too. Why do religious people want to live eternally? The fact that we will die someday is the whole reason that life is so precious. Why waste your life worrying about what happens when we die instead of enjoying the short time that you get to live? It seems to me that religion is a waste of a life. You will get more out of your 80+ years than you will in an eternity just by opening up your mind.

Update:

I'm dead. I'm living an eternal life. Now what?

Update 2:

Jacob - 10 points if you can give me evidence of how you know this. The bible isn't evidence.

Because part of what I (as a Born Again Christian) believe is that I will be given a new body when I enter Heaven. Why? Because Heaven is perfect, and my body in it's current form is not. I need to be given a 'clean' or perfect body (it may be a physical body, or not. I do not know, no one on this planet does) to enter Heaven. In a perfect body, one without sin, or decay (i.e. aging), living eternally all of a sudden doesn't seem so bad. Outside of a physical body, everyone is a spirit being - a soul if you like. This lives forever. After you physically die on Earth, you have only two choices for eternity. Either Heaven, or Hell.

Of course, if you don't believe in the Bible, then this obviously sounds far-fetched and stupid. Which is okay. I can't expect to believe what I believe!

@OP: If the Bible isn't evidence, then it ruins my whole belief system. And in that case I would agree with you, eternal life makes no sense. The only reason eternal life makes sense is if you believe in the Bible. I am probably not any smarter than you - without the Bible, you tell me how eternal life makes sense using our current scientific knowledge? It doesn't, and we have no way of knowing, without the Bible. So I'm sorry that I can't provide you with 'evidence' outside of the Bible. :)

You only think that way because you are thinking like a creature of flesh. You are more than that. You are an eternal spirit being. You will exist forever, either in an eternally blessed state in the Kingdom of God, or eternally separated from God with all who love evil more than good.

You're right! What a terrible thing that would be, eternal afterlife. The Christians say in the afterlife you praise his holy name for ever, can you imagine anything more horrible!
