Whats the trick with cloth diapers?

I have a 2 year old, and I used conventional diapers with him, and we found out baby number 2 is on the way. I am interested in using cloth diapers this time around, but i guess i just dont quite understand.... from what i gather, the cloth diapers these days go along with disposable inserts... is this not basically the same as throwing away diapers? I am looking for a washable alternative to anything disposable. I am pretty handy, and skilled at the sewing machine, so given the right concept, i could even make them myself. Does anyone have any ideas or info that may help me? Im looking to avoid disposable diapers entirely if possible. Theres got to be a magic material, some type of reusable absorbant stuff.... maybe like that orange cloth they advertise on tv with the squinty guy? i cant remember what its called. Anyway, any tips or motherly tricks are welcome. thanks in advance

You might look into G diapers- you could purchase one and then make your own using them. I really like them. They have cloth and disposable liner options. I used the disposable liners while out and the cloth ones at home. The liners are not the same as using disposable diapers in that they are biodegradable and they are also not as bulky as a diaper itself.

Go to eBay and purchase several different cloth diaper styles inexpensively and then find what you like and purchase or make more based on that.

Go to Google and search cloth diapers and you can find the different materials used. Flannel and terry cloth are popular options.

I used the bambino mio nappies with my daughter. Basically, you have a cloth insert which you fold into a plastic nanny outer. Both these parts of the nappy are washable and reusable. You then have a disposable paper-like sheet with you lay over the folded cloth. This is to catch any solid waste. It is bio-degradable but to be honest, I don't think its necessary. Just to let you know though, i set out with the same good intentions as you with the re-usable nappies but after a couple of months I started using the disposable ones all the time. I used to use disposables when were were out for the day as I didn't fancy carrying smelly nappies about with me all day long. But then I noticed that the re-usable nappies are so bulky in comparison it seemed to be harder for my daughter to sit up etc when she was wearing one. Things like sitting in her Bumbo seat and her door bouncer were also impossible when she was wearing a re-usable nappy as she didn't fit in! So I stopped using them and she seemed much more comfortable in the disposables.
