What is the difference between caramel, butterscotch, english toffee and butter toffee?

What is the difference in how each of these are prepared? I know that each has a slightly different taste but also pretty much the same too.

Caramel is made with sugar, milk and/or cream, butter and sometimes vanilla where as butterscotch is made with brown sugar. Toffee is butterscotch but it has been cooked for longer. The main difference is the different sugars and that toffee and butterscotch are richer rather than sweeter containing more butter than caramel.

English toffee is typically made with brown sugar, which provides it a deeper, richer style, whilst butter toffee is American and many times basically has usually happening sugar, meaning you style the butter in it greater.

Bakin' deserves the nod - that's exactly right. The other answer is just plain daft.
