What are some recipes and tips for grocery shopping on a budget?

My best friend lives alone, and I am looking for some ideas to help him out when it comes to cooking. He has a very limited budget for food, about $40 for two weeks worth of food. I am looking for some recipes, tips, and ideas to help him maximize his budget and also try to incorporate in some healthier foods. Since it's cheap, he is usually living on frozen pizza and chips, but I really am worried about his health and would like to see some fresh vegetables and lean meats involved.

Any ideas you have would be awesome. I am usually good about getting his grocery planning done (He's a little bit useless when it comes to budgeting) but the well in my brain has run dry and he still needs to eat.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

Frozen pizza and chips are not cheap. Turkey is the most economical protein you can buy. Roast a turkey with vegetables and you have a first meal. Make a soup with the carcass. Package the remaining meat in single portion sizes and freeze. The turkey meat can be substituted for any meat in any recipe.Lots of fresh produce. Teach your friend to shop the Farmer's Market and locally owned vegetable markets for fresh fruit and vegetable that are better quality and better priced than what you can get at the super market or WalMart. Teach him to do weekly meal planning. Left overs from one meal can be used as a base of another meal later in the week. Avoid processed foods> Packaged Mac and Cheese may taste OK but is is more expensive and much less healthy than a Mac and Cheese that you make yourself.

    You are a good friend.

    Buy generic brands

Buy a pack of frozen mixed vegies & that will be all your green & yellow vegies.

    Buy a bag of potatoes

Cheap cuts of stewing meat, ground beef & chicken or turkey

Pasta & rice are a must as they go far.

    Bread is also a must

Get his fruit at market stalls as it is possibly cheaper.

Buy the ingredients for baking cakes & cookies as it works out much cheaper.Again buy generic bands of flour, sugar & cooking margarines etc.

Don't waste money on sodas, candy or ready made desserts.

    Generic cereal & milk

I have to hope food is cheaper in the USA as $40 wouldn't keep me going for a week in Australia. He should look at getting someone to share his living quarters with as two can live cheaper than one owing to utility & rent expenses being split by half.Good luck mate!

    1. Never go shopping hungry.

    2. Plan a menu for the week and then make a shopping list so you don't buy 'extras' or anything unnecessary.

    3. Sausages, mince meat go a long way in meals and different like curry, onion gravy and mach, casserole, meatloaf, spaghetti, nachos, meatballs, sausage rolls, shepherd or cottage pie.

    4. Tins of fish are great for the same reason like on sandwiches, in salads, patties, cheesy mornay, pasta sauces.

    5. Pasta, rice, potatoes and bread are a cheap and multi use filler.

    6. Eggs and flour to make fritattas, quiches, omlettes, muffins etc.

    7. Canned or bags of frozen vegetables so they don't go off if not used.
