TO Netflix Or NOT To Netflix? ?

I am wondering if I should try Netflix. My main concern is the selection. As hard as it may seem, there are no video stores within 30 miles... Only Redbox and Blockbuster kiosks. That's quite limiting. When I browse the selection Netflix has, it's hard to believe that they can become so big and successful with such a tiny selection. Are they not showing the entire selection until I sign up? Am I somehow just stupidly not finding the larger selection?

Any other pro or con opinions would be a appreciated . Thank!

What do you mean, "small selection"?

Streaming? That's largely a function of having to strike deals with the individual studios over licensing and payment issues.

Netflix didn't become big on the back of it's streaming service, but on it's DVD mail service, which is still the best deal for movie lovers going. Unlimited rentals, three at a time, for $17 a month is a bargain if you watch one every two days and send them right back to be replaced with a new disc. That breaks down to about a dollar a film, equal to or better what Redbox and Blockbuster charge at their kiosks ($1-2 a day), but with the added benefit that Netflix discs aren't stripped of their special features, unlike many films in the kiosks, which contain just the movie; anyone looking beyond new releases for foreign, classics, art-house, Criterion editions, etc etc, should be going the Netflix route too.

Even though Netflix has made one bad decision after another over the past year, I would still recommend them. However, I suggest that you use the DVD shipping method as opposed to the streaming plan. Streaming was really great for a while but all of the owners are pulling their streaming rights from Netflix and selling them to higher bidders. The selection of movies to stream on Netflix is extremely poor now, but you can still get anything you want on DVD. If you rent a lot of movies every month like I do, it's a great deal! However, if you just like to rent a new movie (not older ones) once in a while then maybe go with Redbox.

Definitely try Netflix. The first month is a free trial. If you don't like it, you can always end your subscription. They have a wide-spread selection of every genre of movies. If you rent DVDs, there is a larger selection with newer-made movies. If you don't rent them and you just watch them instantly online, there is a smaller selection but there are also some very good movies to watch for free.

I don't have Netflix, but I use the equivalent in my country which is Quickflix.

The online selection is very bad, but if you have the DVDs mailed to you you have a much wider variety of films to choose from, but I find that the mailing process can be a bit of a pain in the butt and every now and then you get a faulty disc. Also know that the price may not be worth it if you aren't watching at least one movie from them per day.

  • Yes, the instant watch selection on Netflix is limited, and not worth it. But I have the DVD mail in service, and I love it. Definitely recommend it.

netflix is up to you, if you get dvd mailed to you you have a bigger selection and the online sucks bunch of crappy movies but does have some good seasons on there. and they say they are trying to improve the online selection. i once had it but i got rid of it. my point of view. better going to a red box

Tiny selection? Are you kidding? I've rented at least 150.
