My computer isn't recognizing blank DVD-Rs...?

I have been using CD-Rs to keep documents off my computer, which has limited space. I recently went to buy more and was convinced by the sales guy that DVD-Rs could do the same thing, but could hold more on each disk, so I went with those. I tried to burn some things onto one today, and my computer isn't recognizing that there is a disk in the drive. It just keeps opening and reading "Insert a disk" when there is already one in there. Is there any possibility that this is a problem that I can fix, or is it just that my computer doesn't recognize DVD-Rs?

I've had this problem before, and simply bought a different brand of discs. Right now, my computer won't recognise Memorex CDs or DVDs, but those from Maxell work perfectly.

I think the problem lies with the CD/DVD player/burner, rather than the computer or the burning software.

Just in case different burning software may fix your problem, try downloading Ashampoo Burning Studio 6. It can even burn Blu-Ray discs. It's free, and I use it myself:

Sick take it your dvd is write in a position, a blank cd /dvd, desires to be formatted, there are a lot of free and pay for applications out there. You could have one all capable, so try going to my pc, then proper clicking on the dvd, you will get some choices, see if structure is within the record, then chose the default choices, don’t attempt to increase the pace of the layout or capability, this may occasionally just create an error, and possibly ruin the dvd as good. Hope this helps. CDR

On the front of your Disk Drive does it say DVD in the middle? like the image below? If not, then your computer wont be able to recognize any DVD not just DVD-R

If this is the case I would suggest either replacing the internal CD drive with a DVD drive (available on eBay) or buying a USB external DVD drive also available on ebay.

More than likely your computer has only a cd drive, they will not recognise a dvd. You would have to up-grade to a cd/dvd drive ( BURNER... there are cd/dvd drives that "read only" and do not burn)
