  • Planning a garden & greenhouse: which vegetables should I put where?

For the first time I have a large greenhouse and large garden to plant with vegetables. I am having trouble finding a source on the internet of which vegetables I should put where. I know tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers do better in the greenhouse, but I have more space in the greenhouse, and I'm wondering which of my other vegetables I should put in there, and which ones will do better outside. I am planting pretty much everything, if anyone has some advice it would be most appreciated!! Thanks!

  • My computer isn't recognizing blank DVD-Rs...?

I have been using CD-Rs to keep documents off my computer, which has limited space. I recently went to buy more and was convinced by the sales guy that DVD-Rs could do the same thing, but could hold more on each disk, so I went with those. I tried to burn some things onto one today, and my computer isn't recognizing that there is a disk in the drive. It just keeps opening and reading "Insert a disk" when there is already one in there. Is there any possibility that this is a problem that I can fix, or is it just that my computer doesn't recognize DVD-Rs?

  • Grandma's canning.... is it safe?

Hi, My grandmother loves to can, she makes all sorts of things, including the typical jam & jelly. She used to bring us a box full of jars(home canning jars), recently she has started re-using old non-canning jars, like her salsa or mustard jars, cleaned and sterilized..... but, I'm done a fair bit of canning myself, and every book you read says "Don't Re-Use jars!!" So, I know the "rule", but I've eaten some of these jams, and so far I haven't gotten sick or anything, and I hate to toss out all my grandmother's hard work, and I tried to talk to her about it, gently, and she just said "Oh, it's fine dear, I've been canning for ages" So, any comments out there that might help, similar situations, advice?? Thanks!

  • Dehydrating Advice needed?

Hi, I'm dehydrating some kale chips for the first time, I've got the kale in the wet mixture, the recipe says to dehydrate on the teflex sheets first then transfer to the mesh screens. I can't find my teflex sheets, I'm wondering if I can use wax or parchment paper instead, or just try it on the mesh screens. Any advice??

  • Need help with making apple fruit leather in a dehydrator?

It's my first time using my dehydrator to make fruit leather. I pureed the apples, poured it out onto the trays, it's been going for about 4 1/2 hours. I just checked on it and the apple mixture is cracking and seperating, I'm wondering what I did wrong? The only thing I can think is that the initial mix was too thick. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

  • How do you switch to vegetarianism in an omnivore household?

I have never eaten much meat, but I have also always admitted that I couldn't go without meat. That being said, I have recently made the decision to go as vegetarian as possible (meaning if I slip up I won't kill myself over it). How did you decide to go veggie, and was it easy or hard? I already cook alot of vegetarian dished so I think the menu will be easy. But I'm also a wife, and a mom of 2 (5 year old twins), so I'm going to be cooking for everyone. Any help,.suggestions on making the transition go smoothly?

  • can you can a curry using a pressure canner?

I've been intersted in canning for several years now, and have canned the usual strawberry jam, apple chutney, that sort of thing, but my friend has a pressure canner and I'm wondering if I make a meal of vegetable curry, or make a curry sauce or curry paste, can I can it using the pressure canner? Also, if you have experience with this, how long does it need to be processed for, and how long is it good for in the cupboard? Thank you!

  • how long do rehydrated shitake mushrooms last for?

My local grocery store only carries dried shitake mushrooms, so when I want to make something with them I have to rehydrate them hours before hand to ensure proper rehydration. I'm wondering how long they would last in the fridge if I rehydrated a bunch? I'd like to have them on hand when I need them. Also, could I rehydrate them, then can them to keep them that way? Thanks for your help.

  • Can you help me decide which restaurant to take my vegetarian friend to?

My friend and I (we're both moms that don't get to go out very often) have decided to go out for dinner & a movie tonight. I'm picking the restaurant and she's picking the movie. first, I thought, easy, my favorite restaurant, which she's never been to, However, she's vegetarian, and this restaurant does have a couple veg options, but not many. Threres also a restaurant I know of that isn't nearly as nice, but does have alot of veggie options. So, do I take her to the nice place where she'll have a couple things to choose from, or the ok place with more options? Help!

  • how long is steak in marinade good for?

We had plans to have friends over tonight, so we put our steaks in a marinade last night (we usually don't marinade, just season & grill) planning on making them tonight, now we have postponed our dinner til tomorrow night, the steaks have been refrigerated the whole time, will they both be okay to eat, and taste ok? They're really nice steaks, we would rather not have to cook them off tonight to use for stir-fry or something. Anyone had 48-hr marinated steaks???

  • making pie without a pie crust?

I found what sounds to be an amazing pie recipe, but I don't have ingredients to make the pie crust. It calls for a strusel topping, so would it turn out ok if I just put the ingredients directly into the pie dish, then topped with the strusel (like a crumble, but with pie ingredients)? It's an apple custard pie.

  • Microsoft Word how to have pages not effect one another?

Hi, I'm not that great with Word as is, so be patient. I'd like to write something in a book format, where i can change things on one page with out having effect all the other pages. Whenever I hit Enter though it moves everything on the following pages. I don't want to have to seperate everything into different documents, I want to be able to scroll from one to the next. This may seem simple, but I can't seem to figure it out, i'm new to the program. Thank you!!!

  • How old should kids be before watching PG movies?

My twins will be 5 in august, I wanted to watch "A nightmare before christmas" with them, because I remember really liking it, but I don't remember if there's really scary parts in it. They're started to watch shows that are a little older, my son loves spiderman and transformers, but still loves diego and thomas. My daughter is the same, she loves wonder woman and batman, but still likes dora and barbie. I checked out the rating and it's PG, should they be at least 8 before I show it to them, or would they like it? I know my friends kids watch all kinds of older adult movies, but i don't usually let them watch adult shows. Thanks for your help.
