What can I do to start labor?

So I am finally 37 weeks and I am wondering what can I to do encourage labor to begin? I don't actually mean have the baby right now as I think it is better for him to be born after 38 weeks. I just want for labor to start, like for me to start dilating and effacing. I have not had any vaginal exams at my doctors appointments so I don't know if I have dilated or effaced at all. My baby has not dropped yet and the doctor said she thinks he is head down. I have not had any braxton hicks contractions at all during my pregnancy. I have not lost my mucus plug. I am worried that since I have not had any of the usual signs that I am progressing into labor that I am going to go overdue which I do not want. This is my first pregnancy by the way.

So what can I do to help move my little guy along?

Update:

Oh and I absolutely will not try castor oil. It can be dangerous and I don't want to risk it.

Update 2:

I'm not trying to actually have him yet I just want to encourage things to start moving. I am showing no signs of labor what so ever and am worried that I will go overdue. I don't want to go overdue because I want to try to have a natural labor without pitocen but if I go overdue than I will need it.

I very much disagree. There are ways to get things moving and help encourage baby to engage. My Og/GYN even encouraged me to get things going. I live a really active lifestyle, like you, I didn;t want to have my son, just encourage dilation and effacement. At 34 week I started walking a mile a day at my own pace. By 35 weeks I was 1cm dilated, I continued to walk, by 37 weeks I was 3cm dilated 80% effaced, continued to walk, by week 38 I was 5cm dilated and 90% effaced. At this point my OB/GYN was scheduling my induction date and I wanted to go natural without pitocin, I told her this, and she told me to start bouncing on the pregnancy ball. (An ordinary exercise ball, sit on it with your hips wide, and bob up and down for an hour or two a day. Try watching TV so the time passes quicker) I did this for THREE days before going into labor. Then one day I sat up from my pregnancy ball and my waters gushed. I was 39.3 weeks along and 8cm dilated... it made my labor so much easier because I had progressed my dilation that quick. I had my son two hours later with hardly no pain. So try to stay active... walk, go up and down stairs, bounce on the ball. All three helped me deliver easier and helped make things progress..

OB/GYN told me that it will not work unless the baby is ready... but by 38-39 weeks baby is usually starting to get ready. By moving and being active you help him/her move closer into the birth canal, hence encouraging labor. Good thing I did this because my son turned out to be 9lbs 9oz and I had him vaginally! Couldnt imagine how heavy he'd be if I waited another week! Good luck, hope things get moving!

Sex helps you dilate and efface. I'm 39 weeks and I'm 3 cm 70% effaced and ive been having sex a lot recently. Also walking a lot as well. It puts pressure in your cervix. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to make actual labor start, as I've learned. Nothing works lol, trust me.

And good for you for trying for a natural labor:) I am too! Hope all goes well for you. I have the same worries about going over due. But who knows. Good luck!

Source(s): 39 weeks and 5 days with my little girl!
  • Nothing, just wait for him to come on his own.

Why are u trying to induce so early i could see if u were 40wks like me but ur not. Let that baby cook a little bit longer

  • Not a thing. Baby's are born when they are ready. You can't move something along that's not even started yet. Until it starts just kickback and relax.
